Hello Bayzle, Thanks for the info, but could you give us just a little hint as to where in the 27 pages of that thread we might find the : "Put in a stop - see JS posting in 'what did you do today' thread." Info ?? Thanks Brian |
Thread: New Web Template |
21/08/2013 10:59:41 |
Hello Norman, Agree with you in that it does not look all that much different, as Diane says it is only a change in the "template" for the webpages of ME and MEW the actual underlying content won't change. Had a squiz at the digital version of the patchwork magazine and found the "page is loading" progress bar is in the middle of the page (where it should be) instead of up the top corner as in ME and MEW where it is very difficult to see on a laptop. Be nice if "someone" could fix it ?? Anyway would be interesting to see how it is implemented in ME and MEW Brian |

Patrick, As has already been said, how about getting the site working before trying to change it yet again. It always seems to be "year zero" with this site and also the old 80/20 rule ie 80% of the MHW people know nothing and 20% know something but finding those 20% is always the problem. When is the Latest Model Engineers' Workshopgoing to be updated on the front page ??? almost the end of August and July issue still showing !!. OH!! and when the "person" upgraded the hardware on the 8/9th August do you think he/she should have gotten around to removing the upgrade message or are we going to have to look at it for another couple of months. You seem to have (temporarily ??) gotten the PocketMags function working for at least ME and MEW but it doesn't work for other mags that I subscribe with MHW for !! That's all I can think of right now, as someone has said "bah humbug" to FB, Twitter and whatever else just give us a functional website. AH!! just thought of another one....When you attempt a "global" search of the site for a subject, you are only actually searching in post headings, bit useless. Sorry if this is your new job Patrick, think you may have been sold something that "fell off the back of a truck" as ideas go. Regards Brian Edited By Brian in OZ on 20/08/2013 00:51:15 |

Sid,
Thanks for your reply will try out the PocketMags reader again, I thought that "refresh" reloaded a magazine. Anyway will see. Also thanks for the info on the spell checker, that's a bummer that custom words are in a cookie, wonder if I can exclude that cookie from deletion. No "edit" in sight, so will wait till I post this message Koalas were friendly but those darned eucalyptus leaves get stuck in my teeth, we discussed the merits of leaves near the trunk as against leaves on the outer area of the tree. No consensus.. Brian K AHA !! found the Edit function..... Edited By Brian in OZ on 20/07/2013 04:44:23 Guess it only stays there for a short while, interesting that "back" works too..

Hi Gents and thanks for your comments. Sid......Before trying out the off-line reader for my comments in this thread I actually re-installed the reader direct from the PocketMags site, did not un-install as was concerned that I would loose all my downloaded mags..Anyway will have another go and "print" icon is definitely not on my screen. Having "only" 58 posts on this site I had not gotten around to finding that the editor HAD a spell checker, must use it...Ta ever so much.. Neil.....I'll give the "Edit" function a try, except when posting while on line I usually make up any posts in Notebook or Word and use the appropriate spell checker. FF spell checker seems to work on most websites. In another thread someone mentioned that this editor "times out" if you take too long writing up a post, but certainly did not happen in my post about PocketMags. So I can use this editor with more confidence. I find using this website a bit like learning some new Windows software, "we" are the beta users discovering all the "anomalies".. In all the excitement I forgot to check out the iTunes access to the issues will do that tomorrow. Those Koala bears were very friendly, must try that again to "unwind".. Just tried the spell checker, does anyone know what SCAYT is ?? as the checker wants it enabled or disabled. Brian K NB..just trying the edit function...ie..left click on the new posting and "back" so that your posting re-apears in the edit box.. wow!! it works, thanks Neil, but where is the date thingy ?? |

Weeelllll !!! that was a waste of a good hour. Thanks to the hints on this and the other thread I did manage to get my subs to ME, MEW and MM "hooked" to my PocketMag account, but it seems only current issue and issues back to August 2012 are available to me. Where are all the other archived issues and those previous issues I have actually paid for ??
Tried to read issues ON-LIne with
Tried to read issues OFF-LINE. OH ! yes, somewhere along the line my spell checker has been disabled, maybe new version of FireFox doesn't have it.
Ya all hava good day now ya hear !!!

OOPS!! forgot my spell checker.. By the way I often see a message such as "Edited By Robbo on 18/07/2013 21:13:48" at the end of a message, is this generated by a particular editor program ?? |

Agree, it looks good but "This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad", wonder if I can use iTunes via PC to do the same thing, if so, very good insdeed. Am loading iTunes on my PC to give it a try. Maybe it is so new even the moderator's don't know about it ??? That's MHS for you. I have recently started using PocketMags to source specialist mags and find it quite good, but the PC off-line reader is a litle "twitchy" though I see in another thread that the issue of printing may have been fixed. Wish the PocketMag help were a little bit more informative, a recent enquiry resulted in an absolutly stupid reply. I'll be charitable and assume a PC rather than a human answered my enquiry |

Hello Thor, The link to Harbor Freight is great only problem is postage to this part of the world is humongous. I can't find the plans for the small pipe bender listed in the the link you gave, guess the picture says it all, but wondering if you by chance had a copy of the plans. Regards Brian |

Thread: First attempt at silver soldering :-( |
22/04/2013 02:48:03 |
Hello Jerry,
THEN ! Either way I think I can safely say with reasonable surety that a propane torch will not provide the heat output required for silver brazing, it is usually used for "soft" soldering ie lead/tin alloys. I have not built model train boilers so some of you guys may have an "issue" with this statement. Also the Bunnings site states that your torch " is ideal for medium joints, soft soldering, paint stripping, glazing, enamelling, jewellery, bending and tempering pipes, aluminium brazing, smelting light metals, freezing seized pipes, bolts and small forging work" Regards Brian

Hi Siddley, If building a whole bike how about toothed belt drive to the back wheel, I think a BMW uses this drive train so not too way out. As for machineing the toothed cogs, check out the article on this site covering re-belting SL and 3/4 Emco's, cogs are machined with a standard milling cutter out of AL.
Let us know how you go

Hi Bob, Yes it is one of those sneaky sites, in fact I just checked out the file I downloaded and found it to be corrupted so can't open it. Deleted it and hope I did not get any other "junk" with it, might go back later and figure out what happened, in the meantime I'll do a Google and see if the manual is available elsewhere. Brian |
Thread: Printing page on digital Model Engineer |
02/12/2012 21:51:30 |
Hi Frank, What on earth did you do with your last msg ?? ((Posting deleted by Diane)) I print from the page viewer though I will say that sometimes a page will take a while to upload and no printing will happen till this is complete. I think it was the previous issue of MEW the "programing person" did not position the "downloading" box very well and it was almost impossible to find (top left corner of the page). Yes, as "Steambuff" says, you print from the page viewer NOT from your browser or operating system. Regards Brian in OZ

Hello "Bob Perkins", The file is there but as Dcosta pointed out be very carefull as the site will try and download some other software to your PC. When it leaves you at the "download" screen simply use your browser to back-up (go backwards) one screen and you will find one of those little boxes to fill in a code, do this and "submit" then a couple of lines above you will seee PDF you are after, simply "right click" it and save, is a good file. Also thanks to Michael, the PDF you made available is really good Regards Brian in OZ |
Thread: Adept vise repair |
07/08/2012 21:19:57 |
Hi William, Take it you mean bronze brazing, if so in a previous life i did quite a lot of cast iron repairs both with oxy and electric...there are some special rods (electric) for cast iron which along with good preparation and pre-heating/slow cooling produce a very good job..need a little grinding to tidy up the welds but otherwise quite acceptable....bronze brazing works too but you need a lot more pre-heating of the item and a good heat source ie oxy acetalyne...tried it with oxy/lp and heat input not so good...but depends on how thick the item is and how big as the rest of the item 'heatsinks' the heat away from the repair..
