To fix Neodymium Magnets.

754 forum posts 2 photos | Good afternoon All, As the title suggests, what adhesive to fix Neodymium Magnets to Mild Steel? I have Araldite and JB Weld. Are there better options? I guess roughing-up (and degreasing of course) both surfaces would be a good idea.

3630 forum posts 128 photos | Pattex branded cyanoacrylate (superglue) worked fine for me when I put magnets into the aluminium soft jaw covers I use on my big Record vice. Magnets came from a LiDL "40 pack" and were recessed into the alloy. Cleaned before sticking but not abraded. I have my doubts about Pinkgrip. Instructions say one surface should be porous. My experience is that sticking metal or similar impermeable substance on to wood or similar surfaces results in far longer drying times, up to 2 days, than sticking to porous surfaces together. 10668 forum posts 2415 photos | The tachometer magnets on my lathe spindle sit in a flat bottomed shallow recess. Whilst the magnets are more than powerful enough to stay on the spindle at 2500 rpm. the recess lip is needed to stop them sliding. No adhesive needed. As Magnets and glue are both weak in shear, a physical restraint is best, not glue. Only needs a shallow lip. Dave |

Watch the roughing up, Neodymium is very prone to rust hence the plating on them. |

In my day, most typical adhesives were considered strong in shear, weak in tension - cyano-acrylate (superglue) aside which was developed (as Eastman 910) to be relatively weak in shear for specific purposes. Must be something else that changed in the modern world that I can't keep up with. |

1221 forum posts 161 photos | as most news are nickel plated a lot of glues don't grip too well what I have done in the past is to bore a close fitting recess and fit the magnet then distort the edges slightly as the mags have slightly rounded edges. |

754 forum posts 2 photos | Good morning All, I like the idea of cutting a recess for the magnets, but the material is only 1/16" thick. Yes, a 1/32" recess would be possible, but the steel strip is quite narrow, and I fear any recess(s) would weaken it. I'll experiment with JB Weld and bear in mind the comment from Dave Halford regarding the plating on the magnets. |
