… in what context …

23121 forum posts 1360 photos | Having noticed the time … I filled a couple of lightweight baps [Henlan Bakery] with Pastrami and some Cornichons for a late lunch. It served the purpose nicely, and each roll contained 50g of Pastrami Then I read the ‘Nutrition’ details on the pack !! In what possible context could 25g of Pastrami comprise a serving ?? 1395 forum posts 30 photos | seem to recall some debate on R4 re these suggested servings - one suggestion was that some foods contained high salt, sugar etc that for any sensible portion would place them well over the daily allowance and thus rate a red traffic light under the current UK labelling arrangements - small portion sizes avoided this. |

Just wonder how many customers actually take notice of the labels anyway!? Looking at the larger population, they do not care what is printed on the packaging. |

6956 forum posts 229 photos | More informative is the number of slices. Seriously who amongst the readers knows the readers knows the average weight of a slice of pastrami and hence what 25g actually represents? As I would only ever have such an ingredient as one part of a larger collection one or two slices would be enough. Especially when considering the price, During lockdown I realised just how short a time a packet of porridge or muesli lasted me as I was in the habit of half filling a deep bowl. I cut down to two heaped spoons, sometimes only one, which initially seemed drastic, but actually proved to be enough. |

23121 forum posts 1360 photos | The number of slices in the pack is, of course, eight … and it must be quite an achievement to slice pastrami that thin !
Given that 2 slices only represent one fiftieth of the daily “reference energy intake” … I posed the question of context. MichaelG. |

1395 forum posts 30 photos | preserved meat is also on the watch list for nitrites which have suspected of being carcinogenic as for porridge/museli - oats are still cheap, waitrose muesli is considerably cheaper than the fancy brands and you can always dilute it with either their base (abt 2/3rd the price) or as i usually do jumbo oats tho now the 'health food' shops tend not to sell the large 5kg bags that worked out much cheaper |

Having noticed the time … I filled a couple of lightweight baps [Henlan Bakery] with Pastrami and some Cornichons for a late lunch. ...... What the (expletive) is a cornichon I thought so I googled it. Seems we Brits call them gherkins. How anyone eats them is beyond me, I'm sure that's what Roald Dahl had in mind when the BFG was eating snozzcumber. |

2661 forum posts 294 photos | Cornichon are typically smaller versions of gherkins and pickled in a stronger vinegar solution. Personal preference on taste and cost is Lidl gherkins. They also have pickled sliced jalapeños if you want to add a quick spiciness to things. We ended up with 2 tins of meatballs and a bag of rice. That 1lb of rice kept growing in the saucepan - got split into a second and third pan before being done. Our second mistake was eating it all and then drinking beer... |

Do I detect the recent onset of cabin fever? Is this a serious engineering discussion? . NO !! … it is a discussion between forum members, about “other stuff of mutual interest” That’s why it’s a thread in the ####### Tea Room !! May I suggest that you read the descriptions of the available Topics before criticising further ? MichaelG.

2444 forum posts 139 photos | I find cornichons a bit intense, and prefer larger gherkins, sometimes sold as 'dill cucumbers'. My dad was a German emigre and told me that when he was young in the 1920s (jeez, that's a century ago now!), kids would buy them wrapped in paper to eat like icecreams on hot days - and mild ones really are nice eaten like that. From English shops, I think Polish ones are best. Like others, I reckon the pastrami portion size is deliberately understated on packaging so as to cut the allegedly 'suspect' content, especially saturated fats, sodium in general and nitrite in particular. |

What the (expletive) is a cornichon...... Very subtle Duncan, kinder than the more used abrviation, mad me laugh, the thread is great to my mind, but of light relief from metal. You get a good rounded education on this forum, seriously. Pete |
