Gentlemen,

Good evening, I'm looking for a photo resizer, free to download, I had one on my old Laptop but when it died in April I lost it and I can't remember its name, I'm now trying to look for one as I need to resize some pictures, does anybody have any suggestions for one I can download and is easy to use.

Thank you,

Martin P

No doubt you'll receive very many suggestions.
Mine is the excellent IrfanView. It has various options for resizing.

MS Paint will do it.. ..still here in the 'open with' dropdown in W10, if you right click on a jpg..

If you want a complete free photo editor, then 'Photoscape' is competent, well-featured and stable; have used it for years..

This appears to be a Windoze question, but if you happen to have an iOS device available, I recommend CropSize.

Another. vote. for Irfanview. It will do batch processing if you want to do the same thing to a set of images.

I must be as thick as a plank, I've downloaded Irfanview I think ive reduced a picture but it does'nt ask where I want to save it so don't know what its done with it and am I assuming that I need to reduce copies as I dont want to reduce originals.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but my preference is for Faststone Image viewer, the first one on the list, rather than just the resizer.
Far more powerful than just a resizer, though it will happily cope with a whole folder of images at the same time.
It also works as a basic but comprehensive image editor, and allows text overlays etc.

Windows only though from XP onwards

Martin, don't be so self-critical, no software (especially graphical progs) is easy to pick up quickly.
With IrfanView you have to look at the "Save As" once you've finished with your image:-

victor.jpg

At the bottom of the left hand box above (Win10) make sure you correctly specify the location to <Save>
Failing that, IrfanView will automatically <Copy> your modified image so just close & reopen IrfanView then <Paste> or simply press Ctrl+V and the modified image will be reappear - I've done that in the image above.
There's also the <Save Original Folder> command. Clicking that will overwrite your original unless you rename the newly modified image.
(Do have a look at the "Acquire / Batch Scanning" function. Also, the package of "Effects" or Add On filters you can d/l for free from the website is impressive; many can mimic complex Photoshop effects.

Our son in law loaded Paint onto my PC, and this is what i use to resize pictures.

Pictures have to be resized.one at a time, but they can be decreased or increased,as required.

Mostly I reduce files of about 4 Mb to about 1 Mb so that several can be sent by E mail (My system does not seem to be be able to deal with more than 10-12 Mb at a time ) If the reduction is overdone, it is simple to increase again.

Obviously, if the increase in size is excessive quality suffers, a 1 Mb file won't look good resized to 5 Mb.

1 Mb seems to reproduce quite satisfactorily in a magazine. (I was told that 500 Kb would suffice, and, for a while used this, but finally settled on 1 Mb as the target,.giving good reproduction, and the ability to transmit a reasonable number of images attached to one message..

since it's windows, google Powertoys for Windows - a uSoft developed add on for windows- installs and if you right click in the folder you have the images you can select one, more, all images, set a size to resize to and it does them in a flash. Also gives a few other features that try to make windows better..

It works well, is hidden, no adds, no thinking, nothing to learn..

As suggested by others, I also use Irfanview - it's free and can do a great deal more than just resize pictures. I wouldn't be without it.

Most software will do a basic resize with interpolation.

If anyone does feel like spending money, I can recommend Topaz Gigapixel AI which is outstanding. Using this software, there are several articles that have appeared in MEW recently that previously we would have had to reject because the photographs were so tiny, resampling normally them would have introduced awful effects.

The denoise and sharpen versions of Topaz are outstanding as well and have rescued other images for the magazine.*
