I have started a series on youtube about . Show us your workshop. It is going to be quite a long series & probably get a lot of bad comments on this site, due to Old men like me not liking other old men's posts.

But what the Hell. I do what i do & a lot of people seem to appreciate it. Especially those with a little knowledge of engineering. I fall into that bracket. My Son tonight said Dad, you are the cleverest man i know. You seem to always work things out in a way i cannot understand.

I must admit that i have a strange way of working things out using what i call Logic. Sometimes i get it wrong & sometimes correct. So have a watch of my latest series . I know a lot of you forum members have the similar Logic to me. That is why you make the things you do. Whether it be steam or IC. or other. You all have a gift that most people do not. Be proud guys & gals. If you like then please give me a thumbs up. If not & you know who you are then slag me down as usual.

Make sure you always keep your location nice and vague; you don't want the wrong sort of people knowing what sort of tools and security you have.

I've pinged you a message with your house number on, with how I found it. I didn't do anything illegal or anything like that, it was a three minute search, but it's worth being aware we give away loads without realising.

Much of imaging equipment stores precise location data in the file and it can usually be stopped from doing so.

This link shows info for Apple devices and stopping it being on there I expect there is plenty of info out there for other gear.

Certainly worth changing settings if you are posting pictures/videos to forums etc.

Well you are welcome to visit mine here *** Journeyman's Workshop *** has been on-line for many years with no problem although all the images have been edited so there is no 'exif' data there as far as I know.

Keep that location very very secret

a good friend of mine attended a vast number of rallies with his 4” t engine, which proudly displayed his name and the small village where he lived. All went well for years, until his workshop was cleared out while he was at a 4 day rally. They came with a lorry , neighbours thought he was selling up……

A difficult problem is a rally guide which states where you are from. Easy search in the phone book for an address

I am afraid I fall into the negative camp on this issue Steve. As a friend of mine commented many years ago about Social Media "No good will ever come out of it"

What I don't understand is why anyone would want to make a video of their workshop, let alone why anyone would want to look at it. I avoid all SM like the plague and see it as inhabited by those with a weakness driven by vanity.

What exactly does giving you a 'thumbs up' do? Does it link me to your SM network in some way that egregious organisations can make assumptions about my preferences? If people put up YooToob links I ignore them - I have probably only ever watched any YT content on a handful of occasions and found it all to be extremely sad. Far better to communicate by the written word on a forum such as this, to a known fraternity of like minded souls.

Sorry if my views have offended, I must say however, that I do enjoy your contributions to this forum.

The Readers wives Workshops articles in MEW have always been quite well recieved so there must be quite a few who like being nosy. Plus there are often comments on here about things seen in the background of photos that encourage conversation.

As you have shown us your's Steve, its only right that I should show you mine. This thread is basically what was in the MEW article on my workshop

Personally I love to nose round other people's workshops, they always seem to have come up with clever ideas that I have not thought of. But please be careful about divulging any information about your location, I put some rare-ish classic bike parts on ebay once and the day after listing them on a 7 day auction came home from work to find someone sitting outside my house who wanted them badly, he was quite legitimate and actually a well known restorer. When I asked how on earth  he knew my address ( it doesn't appear from ebay until the purchase is completed)  he said " theres a box addressed to you on the shelf behind!" so you can't be too careful. It was not clearly visible in the pictures until zoomed in on, but shows you can unwittingly divulge information.

I am ashamed of how congested, (Originally, I said compact ) untidy and dirty my shop is. If no one is claustrophobic, you just get three people in there, elbow to elbow!

The swarf get swept from under the plastic mats about twice a yea, if we're lucky!

Me too! I tidy up before starting new projects, otherwise my workshop is an embarrassment! I like it messy, but it's a guilty pleasure best indulged in private.

I like to see how others organise themselves though. It's just a step further than I would go because it's so easy to leak information useful to the ill-disposed on the internet. Not that I have anything worth nicking, but a break-in would be upsetting.

I've just been having a look at the photos I have in my album in this forum, couldn't find any information that would giveaway my location. looked in other members albums, same lack of info. I assume that the metadata is removed when the photo is uploaded to an album?

Perhaps someone with the necessary computing knowledge could verity this to be so.

Do keep your exact location secret, you never can tell what unsavoury individual may be lurking,looking for easy pickings.

Do make your workshop secure.. Close off windows when not in use, and have good locks on the door

If you have a hasp type closure, use at least two coach bolts withe nuts inside, and good quality padlock

That may be expensive, but not as costly as replacing the things that would be stolen..

You spend year and lots of time and money equipping your workshop, but a blaggard with an hour to spare can pinch the lot.

If the hinges are exposed, make / fit hinge bolts. Take a couple of sturdy wood screws and turn off the head. Use a drill chuck to screw them into the door until about 18 - 20 mm is left standing out. Trying to close the door should mark the post to show when to drill the holes.

I helped to make a commercial premise secure, heavy beam across the doors, interlocked with the burglar alarm system. We thought it was secure.

The weak point was the back door, Smashed out of the wall and the oxy acetylen kit used to burn through the beam on the main door!, to steal whatever was portable!

Thanks to Steve, John, and Jason for showing us their workshops.

Since I never get to see anyone else's workshop in the flesh and no-one in my family ever had a workshop before me, it's helpful to see the things forum members have and how they organise them.

I am not that someone but would echo your request. The forum already imposes a limitation on the upload format and I wonder whether this could be tweaked (if necessary) to exclude EXIF metadata.

I gather from a recent article in the computer press that Windows File Explorer can clean individual files whilst EXIF Purge and an Android app called Photo Metadata Remover will also perform batch operations.

Presumably, the main danger is from GPS-enabled phones and cameras giving away precise locations?

Best to make sure you set things like your camera to deny location data, Youtube is also further down that list on my phone
