Recommended Vice for Double Swivel Milling Slide

Hi,

I am about to take receipt of this milling slide and intend to fit it on my Warco WM180 Lathe.

The links in Steve Jordans video showing how to fit the slide don't work and I was wondering what vice he had attached to the slide. I need a vice so looking for help identifying the correct one for this slide?

Dead ringer for the Myford slide. Table is small enough as it is, do you really want to take up most or the available area with a vice? Often better to clamp work direct to table or have an angle plate with some toolmakers clamps.

I have that type of vice and have to small vices that I sometimes use with it both I think are available from RDG

I have a toolmakers vice with 50mm jaw and that is perfect for small items. There is a similar one on the ARC web site look up precision tool vice on there. I have made some small clamps to fit the vice and the slide.

Does anyone know whether Myford has changed the spacing of its Tee-slots ?

• Chronos states Mounting Studs 30 mm between centres
• Myford seems silent on the matter

Good morning William,

I have that style of slide for my WM250 and use Warco milling slide vice item No. 9071.

You may be able to adapt the Warco milling slide base plate to fit your milling slide.

I have an elderly Myford vice, identified as an MA71, seemingly similar to the ones currently sold by Myford as their original small vice, but now in a choice of colours, and each with a different reference no.

The hold-down slots are 1 9/16" (1.562" ) apart which think is, or was, Myford tee-slot spacing.

My vice has been useful over the years, but there may now be better ones on the market.

That was my understanding … Just wondered when [if at all] Metric dimensions had crept in at Myford.

Well, it says "mounting studs" are 30mm apart which sounds more like the mounting on the cross slide. This may be the alignment pins which both go in the same Tee slot IIRC

It looks wasteful of space to bolt the vice to the slide with slotted flanges, as the Myford offerings appear to. The RDG item 10036 on their 'other vices' page looks most like the one I've been using successfully for 18 years - it uses counterbored capscrew holes through the floor to T-nuts. The Warco version 9552 looks similar, but they ain't got 'em in. However, mine's 3" wide, and I've not found another to match that.

Just make sure the spacing matches the vertical slide slots. On mine it's 1 9/16" (39,68mm), as described above by Clive and others. If more recent slides use, say 40mm, it shouldn't be difficult to find ways to accommodate that.

Yes, I quoted that … I’m just struggling to recognise 30mm as “a dead ringer for” anything Myford

I only have the fixed/plain Myford vertical slide, so I am not familiar with the swivelling version.

I'm fairly certain that one mounts it on the cross slide with the alignment pins and the tee nuts all in the same slot, so the tee slot spacing is irrelevant. I have the old style swivelling slide and the holes in that also do not correspond to the tee slot spacing.

"dead ringer" generally refers to impersonation not duplication, doesn't have to be exact. This product seems to look exactly the same as the "real" Myford one.

Oh well …I always thought it meant something more like “visually indistinguishable from”

The Warco 9071 (60mm Jaws) and the larger 9360 (83mm Jaws) look ok, can I use the larger and the smaller one?

I think you only have 75mm cross slide travel on the WM180, so the 60mm wide vice is probably the most usable (bear in mind that some space is needed to be able to wind the cutter off the work, and it is occasionally desirable to be able to mill over the end of the vice).

I have a similar setup on a mini lathe with a 50mm wide vice and 70mm cross slide travel and occasionally wish for a narrower vice, but never a wider one (I’m sure I’ve seen a 38mm wide one that I was coveting, but can’t find it now.)

This is my setup - definitely get a vice that can be secured by through-holes (like the Warco 9552 or 9071).

Andy, thanks, just looked at the Warco 50mm vice (also out of stock), but I have set a notification on both the 50 and 60mm variants
