small toothed belts

Does anyone know of a source of short toothed (cogged) belts suitable for a lead screw drive.

I thought this would be a simple Ebay search but spent an hour to no good result

Maybe I am using the wrong keywords?

Any ideas pls

If it is a cnc belt have a look at cnc4you webpages. There is a lot of info, they sell belts and pulleys.

I just did a search on ebay for 16mm (and 20mm) timing belts and found dozens of examples of belts and pulleys.

It is not clear from your post whether you want belts that run on smooth pulleys (known as asynchronous) or belts that run on toothed pulleys (known as synchronous).

A good place to start to survey the market is manufacturer's websites: Gates (not Gareth or Bill), Fenner (not Dave or Keith), Mitsuboshi (sic, not the car maker).

The question was for a " toothed (cogged) belt suitable for a lead screw drive". I would assume (I know, should never do that) that it is not for a smooth pulley. All of the electronic lead screw projects that I have seen use a timing belt, especially if used with a stepper motor for CNC.

There is one on my Bosch PHO 2-82 planer. I’ve only needed to change it once in about 30 years of ownership.

I often use Bearing Boys for belts of all sorts, what you are looking for are timing belts which they list under transmissions. I wanted a smaller belt than the range they supply for the encoder drive but I got the belt and pulleys from them for the stepper drive. I have no connection other than a satisfied customer with the company. Service has been prompt and although I have not chased the absolute lowest price for items I have found their prices very acceptable.

thats more like it, they sell the SS belt and the sprocket (small 1" dia)

presumably one would need to make a larger driven wheel say 75mm dia oneself

Bed speed I think a max of 3" per min down to say 0.3/min (must recheck) so 10 tpi gives 30 rpm max on the lead screw.

Why would you need to make the 75mm pulley when they are available, something like this for XL size belts or this for T5 size belts and just modify to suit though you could make if you wanted to but you don't seem too keen to do that.

Not sure where you get your max an min bed speeds from but the minimum on mine is more like 3" and the max something like 12-15" ideal for rapid return and my spindle speeds are not any higher than yours. Simple way to work out what you need is to mount up a cutter and a bit of metal and mill it, make a note of how many times you turn the handwheel in 60secs to get rpm, Unlikely you take 20seconds to do one revolution unless you have something seriously wrong with your chip loading.

If you are able to find a copy of MEW 164 there is an article in there "form
relieved toothed belt cutters " June 2010 for making cutters for
1/5 " XL ,3/8" L and 5 mm HTD pulleys and the calculations
for the pulley sizes.

Thnx JB as you can see I was looking in the wrong place with the wrong keywords - its in the aesthetic world of CNC and timing belts etc. but prices I saw for large driven cogs were silly money for a hobbyist £50

Industrial suppliers will also have unaffordable prices.

so a new door has opened for me and I have acquired an electric window assy for a tenner - well its a start and I agree that going to stepper motors really is overkill for this duty.

SHG Marine supply many items for model boats , including XL belts and pulleys , all at reasonable prices . No connection with company other than as a satisfied customer .

I've just stumbled upon this thread and, like Nick Hughes, I been using Belting Online for all my belt and pulley purchases. Their prices are what I consider very reasonable and delivery is as quick as 2nd class postie takes. I'm using a 60 tooth XL pulley on the leadscrew driven by a 20 tooth on the servo motor. The spindle encoder doesn't take much in the way of torque, so I've settled for 26 tooth pulleys and HTD3 belting, 9mm wide.
