Never too old to learn I say. Saw this on the interweb today. Cannot say that I ever remember seeing a Rose index in use. Handy method if you have no broaches. mrpete video.

Next shop project maybe ?

Looks pretty handy. I have not come across the Rose Index before. I only found one supplier online, Lakeshore Carbide in the USA. $149 for the 2" version MrPete is using. Wow!!!

But it looks simple enough to make one that would do the job.

5c or er32 collet blocks are a good option if you have them. I also use vee blocks for larger stuff but this is limited to 90 degrees.

Regards.

David.

I was slightly amused to find that the best way of making a square hole involved buying a $150 rose index rather than a $150 broach...

However, it does look like a handy piece of kit - though quite expensive (even before the carriage).

It's gone on my todo list!

Or buy John Stevenson er block from Arc Euro little bit cheaper than importing from the states and do the same job

BUT can you get 2" through a JS block? I cannot. smiley Also a Rose block does 45 - 60 & 90 degrees.

Cheapest way is to make yoiur own.

I think if you were to buy a Rose block (better still, make one) it would turn out cheaper than buying a set of broaches & dies and a press to use them.

May well have misunderstood what's going on, but why is turning through exactly 90 degrees so important for drilling the pin holes?

Wouldn't 'about 90 degrees' be OK, or really any angle so long as the drilled pin holes didn't break into the square hole?

a few laser cut plates pinned together would do it

Anything wrong with a rectangular block and a precision adjustable angle measurer? Some will have angle gauge blocks, some won’t need any great precision, etc.

Maybe because he got sent one to do a review on?

Joe Pie has a cheapo homemade idea here at the 5.00 minute mark, but you have to glue it to the job. But you can buy a lot of glue for $149.

Why not print one? Go to Thingiverse and search Rose Index. Inspired by Mr Pete’ video.

That's a useful principle, thanks, you only need the facets you need for a job so a jig is easy.
