Bench Drill identification

Back in the late sixties my father acquired and restored this bench drill:

This is the only id plate on it:

and this is the motor plate:

I don't know if this is the original motor or a replacement?

My reason for asking is that I want to replace the chuck but don't know if it is in a taper or threaded!

Didn't think of looking there , I'm afraid the coconut has gone dry and the goldfish has sadly passed away but I can offer you a sprout from brussels in time for Christmas if I can get it past Customs ,

Now to see if it gives me the info about the chuck that I so badly need.

Any chuck should fit - if you choose a suitable arbor. It is worth a good quality keyless chuck if used a fair amount.

There is no readable id on the chuck. I have a number of chucks available but until I can remove it I don't know what fits. I can't attempt to remove it until I know the form of attachment in case I cause irreparable damage.

I couldn't see the answer from MichaelG's link but would guess it's on a taper. If so, there will be a gap between the chuck end of the taper and the body of the chuck. I suggest you hold a drill bit in a chuck on the table and drill up through the body of the chuck. If it breaks thorough into the gap you have your answer. You can then tap the hole and insert a jack-off screw to remove the chuck either from the spindle or arbor as the case may be.

Close up photo of the chuck/spindle area would assist. It appears to be a taper fit so the opposed wedges type of remover would work OK.

Thanks Michael, any words you wish said at the cremation?

I have sent an email to Meddings in the hope of a parts list or manual as they do still stock certain wear parts, not the quill though.

Looks to me like a male taper at the end of the spindle, a pair of chuck wedges would establish the truth.

Definitely looks like a taper; to hazard a guess I'd say Jacobs No 6 but might be better to wait and see if Meddings respond.

It looks to be a very useful drill though.

I think you're right but I will wait for Meddings for a couple of days but I'll take a photo right inside the chuck and post it as I'm sure that it is the end of the spindle that can be seen.

This looks to me to something of a red herring !

Is that hole threaded? ..it looks exactly what I'd expect if some former owner has used it to jack the chuck off it's taper before.. ..the 'witness' further in looks as if the end of a bolt has borne on the end of the taper within.

Pretty sure that the other Meddings "lightweight" offering, the Driltru, has a male Jacobs Taper on the end of the spindle. Certain that the smaller Pollards do.

I'd always thought that screwed chucks only really became widespread on pistol drills?

I made a couple of wedges after seeing the price of commercial items and orft it jolly well popped.

The top taper measured approx:

and the bottom:

So it seems to be in the realms of a J6 taper.

Now to give myself a heart attack and see how much a half inch keyless chuck is going to cost Santa!
