I've got a paperless account with BT for broadband, phone line and email.

I can log into the email, no problem, BUT I cannot log into MyBT.

BT have sent me a four digit pin number, but I don't know what to do with it.

Some history, I've been with BT for eight years. Recently BT said they were stopping the email service, first in April, then in July 2020.

During this period, I couldn't log into my email (Wrong password) as a work around, I logged into My BT using the same password, then clicked My email.

Now they have a new email service, they never did close the old one.

I cannot see my bill. I have contacted BT and got a fault reference number.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Bear..

You should be able to get this fixed if you can get put through to the right BT people; the ordinary fault clerks just have a script. Your MY BT password ought to be the same as your email one.

I had a similar issue about six months ago, and managed to get it fixed over the phone once I spoke to the UK based email people. they fixed the issue there and then despite the fact that they had a typo in their record of my mother's maiden name ( which is usually used as part of the online account recovery)

Grizzly Bear,

To get a four digit code you must have requested it via requesting an action from them i.e. changing your password, you put the four digit code into a displayed box on the screen so that BT know you are who you say you are as they sent you the code, this then allows you to change your password etc.

I received those two emails and deleted them as I didnt believe them to be from BT as the format of the form was different, ive had no issues because I ignored them.

Had to log into BT this evening to report a landline fault and I had forgotten the password. Went round the 4 digit PIN to mobile route so I coule reset the password several time with no success. Basically could not login even with correct username and password. Finally switched moved to my newer system and had no problems. The older computer is running an old version of Safari but the new one Firefox Quantum (68.12.0esr (64-bit)). Looks like browser security issues with the old system.

I realise your issues are more to do with your loss of your signing in details but something to be aware of when you do get sorted out. You can do this online. There are various routes to recover username and reset passwords. They will send your username from the account number on your bill.

regards Martin

We had trouble with BT last year. It started when I attempted to log in to My BT. No success. Tried to log into e mails (BT Yahhoo) log in failure. Changed password. Still no success . Repeated failures resulted in us being locked out.

1/2 hr on the phone "W are very busy at this time. One of our operatives will be with you as soon as possible " Finally got to speak to real person. Letter giving code to allow them to access our account would take up to 7 working days . No letter. Phone again . The system should have sent out the letter . Another would be sent . No letter. Same again. , another week Phone again Three letters arrived on the same day giving the code. 45mins on the phone. ,Real person.OK about 1/2 hr. Major problem with your account This needs to be solved by our level 2 team in India. They are on lock down. It will be sorted as soon as possible Nothing changed so back on the phone . Have you a code so that I can to access your account. Long pause. ." This is silly Whoever you spoke to last time has no more access than I do but is certainly does not need level 2 access. Lets sort it out. You seem to have had another e mail address set up to e mail you the code. That is not possible it has to come by mail . Don't hang up I will work on this. I will need to delete this e mail address and sort out the mess A few minutes later Here is your new password . You can now access My BT and change it but everything is now OK It only took 6 weeks !! Its amazing how many e mails you get in 6 weeks !!!

Conclusion/If you get hold of some one , in our case an Irish lady , who knows what they are doing all will be fine. If Not ..............

Grizzly bear, regarding BT stopping the email service, you may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick, a number of providers allowed you to continue using your email address after transfering to another provider. the proposal is to stop that service or charge for it. i have a seperate email account to which i have transfered most of my contacts so that if i decide to change service provider i can ditch the old email.

Not that i am considering moving my internet provider any day soon, despite still being bottom of the league table I personally cannot fault TalkTalk for their prices and service. i have been able to switch contracts to a much cheaper option for the same or bettewr service for the past 5 years.( the latest change was affected by covid19 and had to threaten them with Ofcom to get them moving, they did eventually respond and sorted it out)

Not many TalkTalk customers realise, provided you have been on a contract for at least one month, that you can change to an advertised better/cheaper offer. you get a new cointract start date and no price rises during that new contract period. You might have to be persistant, but if I can do it anyone can.

it all stems from when Dido Harding was in charge when they had two data breaches, it was to stem the tide of customners leaving.

It is like changing your gas/elec supplier, home/car insurance etc on a regular basis to get the best prices (not always the cheapest!!). If you are not proactive it will cost you a lot more for the same.

Cant find the email now but earlier this year BT switched their email servers from Yahoo to BT. The switch over created some minor glitches. My normally on Mail failed to connect for a time but did the next day, after a lot of head scratching.

Be careful with any email purporting to be from a service provider, many are phishing, I always view these type of emails in their raw source as this shows the sending IP address, mostly coming from the USA or Netherlands.

Thanks to everyone that have replied to my query.

I will attempt to digest your answers.

Howi, yes I've got it wrong.

Spent 35 mins on the helpline, then the man spoke too fast and too quiet, I did explain that I was semi deaf and well past my sell by date, all to no avail.

Did a Google, seems like a common problem.

Looked at the fault questions on BT help, didn't see any answers, maybe I got that wrong too.

P.S. Am I likely being charged for the email service?

Bear..

Ady, surely that IP address is the home page of your own router, where you can configure the router settings
MyBT is your home page on BT's servers, where you can access your account details, emails, payment methods etc.

Bear, I'm no longer with BT, having moved to Plusnet when I retired to Buxton.
As mentioned above, BT did change their email provider away from Yahoo Mail, which I understand had lead to some issues for some customers.

Your email account(s) should be supplied free with your BT Broadband account for as long as you remain a customer.
They only charge for it if you leave BT, as I did to Plusnet, and wish to retain the use of your BT email accounts when using a different provider for your broadband.

I've just been having a quick play on your behalf and managed to re-activate my old MyBT account;
If you try and log on using your username (which I assume you know), it gives you the option of having a 4 digit pin sent to your registered email address, which it what appears to have happened to you.
I don't know where to put it either, as I didn't use that re-set option.

If you have another attempt at resetting your password, but rather than accepting the 4 digit PIN to email option, claim (presumably falsely, as you say you've got a PIN) that you can't access your email.

The system will then ask you one or more security questions, and give you the option to re-set your password on-line, by entering a new one into a box, and confirming it in a second box.

Worked for me

Good luck

Bill

It may not be... Did you receive the text of this email earlier in the year?

Hello
We're going to be updating your email service soon to improve reliability. Here are some things you need to know.
The Yahoo! Mail App
Once we have completed your email service update, the Yahoo! Mail app will no longer be supported and you will need to switch to our new BT Email app.
You will receive an email from us when you need to switch apps, along with instructions on how to do so.
If you are using other email applications
If you are using other email applications, then you will need to make a simple change to one of your settings. You can make this change now.
To do this, simply go to www.bt.com/help/emailsettings and follow the simple step-by-step instructions.
After we've updated your email service, you won't lose anything, but you won't be able to receive any new emails until you change your settings.
Need further assistance?
If you need any further assistance, our team of UK-based advisors are here to help on 0800 783 0214.
Best wishes,
BT Email team

This is part of BT's migration away from Yahoo servers that others have mentioned in this thread.

Thanks for that Stueeee

Yes, I did probably receive the eMail that you quote

I have been receiving variations on that theme since about 2014 : some may be genuine, others are clearly phishing attempts.

... BT has quite a history of empty promises about this migration.

What concerns me about today’s eMail is that it’s not personalised [no reference to my account] and it is so brusque as to appear almost threatening.

.

However:

Fearing that this might actually be real; I looked on Apple’s iOS App store, and sure-enough there is a BT Email App being offered .... With probably the most negative set of reviews I have ever seen !

and some of the ‘developer responses’ are truly pathetic.

Michael. Most likely a phishing email, never use a link in an email to go to any of you accounts or where they ask you to reset access. If you look at an email purporting to be from a supplier you can see things that don’t look right, non UK language phrasing is one and obvious spelling mistakes. I always shut down the web browser and open up again to go to a providers web site.

Incidentally the eMail in question looks ‘BT’ in style ... the only hint that it might not be real is the absence of any personalisation.

That said ... before I went for my walk this morning, I sent myself a test eMail : which has not arrived yet.

More if/when I get to the bottom of this.

Like many others we were promised a migration from BT Yahoo mail to BT mail for years . Following our fiasco with BT ( see earlier post  we were told that BT had no control over the migration but that it would happen by Sept at the latest.

On sept 2nd we received the e mail . We only use a lap top for e mails so ignored it . We now receive e mails in the new format with no action on our part.

iPad is sorted now ... Created a new account for BT Email

Settings | Passwords & Accounts | Add Account

... then deleted the Yahoo! one.

Working fine in the Apple Mail App [no need to use BT’s effort]
