Howi F Y I BT own EE, Talk Talk and Plus Net. Just the packages on offer and prices that differ. Strange that so many had problems after BT introduced an "upgrade" Howard wrong again, BT do NOT own TalkTalk, TalkTalk may use BT's network(openreach) but they are not part of tht BT company and never have been. |

Since your lap top is new, you won't have the problem that we had when Talk Talk (alias BT ), without warning, withdrew support for Outlook on W7, leaving us without E mail. Must have happened to lots of people, since it took three weeks to have the problem solved by going for a different E mail system. Thankfully, the "fixer" managed to change over all E mails and address books. Such is the price of what some regard as progress! Howard
TalkTalk, is noithing to do with BT, never has been. |

progress will always have it's winners and losers. Technology will move on regardless. The majority benefit to the detriment of a few, hasn't it always been the same? There are lots of examples I could quote but I suspect it isn't going to change, now, or in the future.

Thread: Hearing aids - NHS or private? |
06/07/2023 13:02:40 |
it depend on where you are, in South yorkshire I can only have one hearing aid on the NHS, over in NE Derbyshire I could get two - go figure. Had an NHS one but was not brilliant, My hearing deteriated quite markedly so decided to go private (Boots). I now needed two hearing aids and decided to go top of range Phonak and yer the price is eye watewring. Blue tooth connects them to my mobile phoine which really helps, they come with acharging box, drop them in over night and ready next morning (actually onlt takes a couple of hours). the charger has a built in rechargable battery which will last about 5 days worth of charging. My only gripe has been replacing the receivers (the speaker bit that goes in the ear) which don't seem to last very long (may be me though!). So far they have been replaced free of charge. If you have been deaf for any length of time, you appreciate what hearing aids can do for you and your quality of life. While i wouldl ike not to have to pay £3500, I would not like to be permanently deaf either. You pays your money and take your choice, as they say.

One common factor throughout the time I've been a member here is the poor reliability of these DC motor speed controllers. They are badly designed and made down to a price. I think personally it would be best to junk the controller and replace it with a genuine KB Electronics one or similar - or perhaps replace the motor with one of these nice brushless sewing machine motors and controllers. your statement is very misleading, there reliability is NOT poor, who knows what users do to them, but I can assure you that bmany thousands of users have no problem with their boards. I have had my lathe now for more than 10 years with no problems despite multiple stall occations. Remember you ONLY hear about the ones that break, there are far more that don't. No! they are noit badly designed, yes! they are built to a price as is everything. I am sure Ketan at Arceuro would have some figures to hand regarding replacedment boards. Crass cover all statements do not help when someone new to the hobby wants to buy a lathe as they will be worrying unneccessarily about reliability.

Howi, Do we accept the 'benefits' of smart tv's? It isn't that long ago that there was something of a furore when it was discovered that one brand of smart tv, was actually listening all the time. And if it was listening, then what is it sending back home. Why should we have to give up privacy just to take advantage of something modern? Peter G. Shaw Hi Peter there are millions of smart devices all over the world what government/entity has the resources to monitor them? paranoia is not an excuse noit to use smart devices. I have googles equivalent of Alexa and it in daily use providing radio reception via internet and providing a rolling display of photos of grandchilkdren and places we have been to. what is not to like? As we get older we become grumpier due to the fact we realise our time is shortening, stop grumping and enjoy what time we have left, technology is there to help, dismiss it and you only lose out.
that's my theory anyway |
24/05/2023 10:09:59 |
it's a fact, as we get older we become more resistant to change, unfortunately change happens regardless. How many of us use electronic devices in our workshops even to the extent of DRO's, CNC,electronic speed controll etc, etc. we all use radios TV's (most now 'smart' The world moves on and the dinosaurs get left behind, all the tech is supposed to make our lives easier. Accept tech for what it is, use it to your advantage or get left behind. |
23/05/2023 09:40:59 |
don't use pins, use fingerprint or facial recognition. be aware who is near you.and your surroundings. I have 3 bankng apps on my phone, hardly ever use home computer. If you do not get your mindset around modern technology, you are more likely to get scammed. Hundreds of millions around the world use the available technology without any issues. Search the internet and you will find that most people who get scammed are not tech savvy, Keep your wits about you and be sceptical about anything/anyone who offers advice, especially regarding money. Doubt whether anyone here will take notice - it's a dinosaur thing..... |

During last year, product costs, postage and courier costs kept increasing steadily, so at some point we made the decision to remove the £75.00 threshold. Ketan at ARC Sound business decision that I am sure you were reluctant to impliment, times are hard for all, especially for those businesses in a small market. Doubt it will affect sales in the long run, just remember folks, there is no such thing as "free postage" it has to be factored in some where. |

Yes! but when you have a Myford, it turns you into a super engineer, increases your bragging rights and can now slag off all the Chinese lathe/mill owners. Oh! joy of joy's More money than sense, springs to mind. Am I jealous, It doesn't show does it?

Thread: Battery powered lawn mowers? |
25/04/2023 09:47:11 |
Hi,What is wrong with petrol mowers and Myfords. Please explain what those on here with Myfords and petrol mowers are like. Maurice It shouldn't be too difficult to work that one out! |
24/04/2023 09:55:50 |
My hover style mower is getting long in the tooth and recently watched a QVC advert for the new GTech (platinum) mower, as we have GTech products (hoover etc) I decided to go for it as it was a good price. I have lawns front and back and have cut through the cable a few times on my old mower, Using the new GTech mower I managed both lawn areas with the battery showing half left, grass collection is good, did a reasonable job on the lawns. Much easier to use and does have a carry handle, though definitely not lightweight. My wife likes the GTech products and recently bought the new GTech Platinum hoover, which she thinks is much better than the old one. Like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for generaly. Of course, those with petrol mowers are like those on here with MYFORDS............... oneupmanship is everything

Thread: Getting started with 3d printers |
17/04/2023 10:05:05 |
I can recommend the Artilery range of printers, poarticularly the Artilery Genius(now Genius pro I think). They come well equipped, easy to put together (4 bolts and a couple of plugs). As has been said, there is a steep learning curve with ALL 3D printers and with the slicer software you will need. I got mine through Banggood, as it was the best price(half the price of other sellers) and was delivered from it's UK warehouse in less than 48hrs. It comes with an accesory bag with tools and spare parts (not needed any of them yet). Bed leveling, first layer height and temperatures of bed and extruder are the first things to get to grips with then move on to the slicer opotions of which there are hundreds (not putting you off am I I have used Cura and Prusa and generally turn to Cura. Don't forget you will need some printer filament, plenty to chose from and lots of colours, and of course Thingiverse for projects to get you going. Then of course, the 3D drawing software, Openscad and Freecad are worth looking at for starters. 3D printing is the ultimate Pandoras box, but it is great fun (and frustrating at times), just don';t get hung up on bed leveling, once you get it set leave it alone. One last thing, auto bed leveling DOES NOT level the bed............. Edited By Howi on 17/04/2023 10:06:54 |
Thread: Chinese imports |
13/04/2023 09:50:58 |
you either like Chinese imports or you don't. China has the advantage in that postal costs are cheap, bearing in mind postal costs are also subject to vat. all the big vendors like Ebay, Aliexpress, Banggood, Hobbyking etc will apply and collect vat from you on your purchase, including postage. An example, I recently purchased some electronic items on Aliexpress for an amount that would not even pay for postage in the UK let alone the items themselves. Another anomoly in Chinese trading is the problem of returning faulty goods. To post a small item costing £5 would cost between £10 and £20 depending on whether it is tracked etc so not worth returning - the Chinese suppliers know this so you have to be on the alert with who you are dealing with. Personally, I only order expensive goods if the item is supplied from a warehouse in the UK or EU, Banggood springs to mind. Anything else I am prepared to accept the 'possible' loss as down to experience. To date I have not been let down by any Chinese supplier and continue to benefit from low prices and cheap postage, Choose right and the item(s) will arrive quite quickly, If I am desperate for an item I will pay the premium if necessary to get it from the UK. Do not be fooled by some ebay vendors who advertise as being in the UK so delivery will be quick, some just pass on the order to China and give you a raft of excuses when the item is not delivered during the timeframe they have given you. I have been stung a couple of times with this - caveat emptor |
Thread: State Pensions - Notification thereof. |
01/04/2023 10:18:59 |
I haven't had my state pension increase notification yet, or my BT pension or fire service pension notification. Why am I not worried!!!! Well! the tax office notified me that my tax allowance was changing and to go online to check, low and behold the tax man knows what I am getting before I do. So long as it is more than last year I am not too bothered. So, why is everyone concerened, just add 10% to what you get now less tax so call it 8% and you are good to go. unless you are one of those on the 40% tax rate, then you can go and work it out for yourself, I'm not going to do it for you, cheeky beggers! |
Thread: Workshop Mistakes (True Confessions) |

I am sure we can all relate to massive cock ups, but remember, those that do not make mistakes, do not learn or make anything. It's amazing what we can make when sat in a chair, the reality is a little different. Keep making those mistakes folks, in the knowledge that you are now wiser than you were before.
