443 forum posts 1 photos | Hi all. I know we try not to be political and this thread does not seek to do that in any way. But I do feel the need to say I hope that our prime minister can recover from this virus. I cannot imagine how things will develop if he does not get over this terrible infection. Regardless of politics or personality this guy is first and foremost a fellow human being and deserves our support, as do the many thousands suffering similarly. The fact that he is also our countries leader makes his wellbeing that much more important. Please join me in wishing him well, and the many others who are affected by this disease. I truly hope we can start to drive infections down and begin to recover our lives. Mick

And of course, none of us knows when it will be our turn. Wishing him, and all others in the same boat, all the best. Edited By Hopper on 07/04/2020 08:34:45 |

3293 forum posts 112 photos | My thoughts exactly. This is no time for ' yah-boo ' politics, and I too wish him a full recovery... ' ' ' My Coronavirus letter from Her Majesty's Government arrived today, along with the latest Model Engineer and a flyer for a forthcoming show in Weymouth Pavilion. In May - I would be very surprised if that can go ahead, in only a few week's time. An interesting point about our governmental system emerged in the News programme this afternoon, about the need to choose a deputy Prime Minister when the PM is ill; but the UK does not have a regular post of Deputy or Vice, PM. (Remember, anyone can fall seriously ill, and at any time, not just in a pandemic.) Prefaced by the hoary old canard about our "not having a written Constitution", we learnt that the British Constitution is not a rigid set of procedures, so it gives the Government a degree of flexibility in such situations. (Our Constitution IS written. Of course it is, but spread over a series of documents and Acts from Magna Carta onwards. Those who claim we don't are misled by countries like the USA, which was founded historically rapidly enough and recently enough to have enshrined practices brought by the settlers, in one paper.) |

10668 forum posts 2415 photos | Generally I think the government are doing reasonably well managing a difficult crisis, but the Cabinet deserves a good hard kick up the backside over the way they mishandled poor old Boris. In a situation where government decisions have to be trusted by the public, someone chose to lie about the seriousness of his illness. Lie. Do politicians really suppose that any individual is so important that Britain will fall apart if he's known to be poorly? It's not true; even if the entire cabinet and all the MPs were hospitalised, the Executive will carry on, and could do so for years if necessary. In 2010 Belgium, hung politics meant politicians failed to form a government for almost 2 years (589 days). Not sure anybody noticed! In China, a politician chose to hide the seriousness of Covid-19 when a doctor first tried to alert the authorities. It's the sort of stupid dishonesty expected of Communist dictatorships. Bad practice here too, especially as the PM being in Intensive Care could have been played positively. (See what happens when you ignore the separation rules at work!) Dave |

... It's the sort of stupid dishonesty expected of Communist dictatorships. ... Dave Sorry - it's any dictatorship, whatever its political flavour. Not sure that China quite fits that label any more - or indeed any of the labels we've become accustomed to. |

Also agree it's difficult to characterise China's current Paramount Leader as a dictatorship. Life was so much easier when Mao-tse-tung and the Gang of Four were in charge! Dave |
