Delays in Shipping from China

Hi,

I ordered some carbide milling cutters from China through AliExpress on the 16th January and I see that they haven't been shipped yet. Normally this happens within a few days of the order being placed. Given the situation in China I'm not complaining - I feel really sorry for them.

Have any others seen this? I don't know how businesses over there are run, but if western companies had to suddenly shut down for weeks at a time, there would be mass closures I imagine.

Regards,

Alan

Hi Alan

By coincidence I received a message from a supplier this afternoon (Australian Western Standard Time) asking for understanding regarding delays. The coronavirus having added to the normal delay with the Chinese New Year. The holiday period has been extended to 10 February and ( hopefully ) normal business will be able to resume then.

Terrible situation the country finds itself in with the number of infections ramping up day after day. Hopefully a vaccine will be along soon.

Cheers

Pero

A quick OT comment:

I just bought some black pepper in my local UK co-op "packaged in Turkey from pepper produced in Brazil".

We have always traveled for spices but that seems outrageous to have a middleman who is not even in the middle.

The postman has just delivered a package from Hong Kong which has not been delayed, so perhaps they are better off than mainland China with regard to delays.

I think we need to be very considerate with Chinese traders, the situation must be very fearsome with the virus showing little sign of tailing off.

Had a message from a Chinese supplier that my order had been "detained by the Security Company" - presumably part of the ongoing restrictions. Going to be a while before things are back to normal.

I have 2 toolholders that I fear I may not get now. If they do arrive is there anything you need to do, like wash them with bleach. After putting on gloves & mask.

Funny enough I exchanged a few Whatsapp messages with Ketan from ARC last week on the same subject. The virus is only supposed to last a short time when it leaves the body but just to be sure his staff will be wearing gloves and masks when opening a couple of consignments due in and also using antibacterial spray just to be on the safe side, at least he has the full range of UVEX PPE to use..

Cold and Flue Viruses? Coughs and sneezes spread diseases. The main way is:

  1. Infected person touches face and gets snot on hands
  2. Victim has physical contact with infected persons snotty paws.
  3. Victim touches face and ingests snot

People touch their faces a lot!

Though it almost certainly can, it's not confirmed yet that this virus can spread from person to person - it originates through contact with birds (chickens).

Most masks are ineffective. Ditto gloves - if you touch your face, gloves are just as good as bare fingers. Avoiding contact is with infected people is best, and if visiting a hospital make good use of the gel cleaner provided. Read all about it here.

Off hand I can't think of a disease that spreads by contact with metal objects. Viruses and bacteria normally need a fair amount of favourable biology to spread.

I expect the Daily Mail will run true to type on this one. Some folk believe God sends plagues to punish humanity for allowing gays to believe in global warming!

I have bought many items from China, and while they do take a while to get here, they do make it.

I would not be too worried about my latest order being delayed ,given the situation right now.

I am prepared to sit back and wait, give them time to sort things out.smiley

We have just had an update from SIEG.

Initially they were hoping to re-start today 12 February 2020, with a small team comprising only of Shanghai residents who had not travelled outside Shanghai. Rest of the workforce returning from holidays were scheduled to re-start 14 days after returning from holidays. All necessary precautions are in place based on local municipal government guidelines, as well as self enforced procedures which are in place.

After further consultation with municipal authorities and internally with heads of department, decision has been made to delay the re-opening of the factory to 26 February 2020, however, this is subject to further review.

Person to person infection fully confirmed. One British national infected in several in France and England.

Masks and gloves are not 100% effective but they do help a lot.
