I know these engines will never be show quality , but the satisfaction you get when something you have made yourself actually works is worth the year's effort . Since I have been on my own , the last five years, the time spent in the shed has helped me stay alive and not sink into a pit of darkness , Many thanks to all those who have answered my sometimes stupid questions . I would like to build a IC engine next . but not too small, as my 80 year old fingers cant cope with tine components . I can turn a flywheel up to about 12 inches on my Colchester . Any thoughts ?

regards Phil

Good on yer. Keep it up. It fills the quiet winter evenings and there is satisfaction at the end of it all.

Is there a model engineer club near you, if there is i bet you would receive a warm welcome.

G'day Phillip,

I know what you mean about the satisfaction when it all starts spinning around. I've only made little tiny wobblers and that was a buzz, must be great when those more complicated ones start spinning around. Well done on those big things,

Here are a couple of links to IC engine plans that I saved a while back I think these are relatively well known and respected sites

Nice looking models, congratulations.

Have you seen any of the engines from Jan Ridders? Videos, details and plans from his website, here **LINK**

Hi Philip, why do you consider them not show quality? They look good to me and I'm sure both the major ME exhibitions would welcome them in the loan section even if you don't feel confident enough for the competitions. Yes, well worth viewing I think.

Regards Nick.

Hi Phil,

Good work, as far as I can see. Worthy of showing, I am sure. Not everyone has to make items with absolute perfection (some are likely too good to use!) Seen that lots of times with tractors - concours and workhorses are entirely different ‘streams’ of build and restoration.

Your size of engine may be limited by your Raglan mill? Or have you replaced it/added another? I see you have not visited for over 3 years.smiley Those pics and a write up of operations, with the little Raglan, would be appreciated over on the forum. They are a very much under-estimated machine, by many.

Great looking engines Philip! Good luck on the IC one. Do please keep us posted on what you decide to build and on the build itself.

Hello Phil, have you thought about joining or even forming a REMAP group, they make or repair all sorts of gadgets for disabled, you'll see their advert in the back cover of MEW magazine, they NEED folk like you Then there is being a helper with many of the groups/ clubs who help out at OUR age groups, such as Stroke Club, Parkingson etc You would meet some very nice people on the way and possibly have some day/meals out.. There would still be time to make swarf. John

Hi Phillip, They are super models; personally I dont look too much at over polished/ glossed models; i prefer the real look in miniature ; I dont think a newly factory finished steam engine stated stayed that way for long in actual use... I think therefore the working model look is the most authentic!

Perhaps some of your engines set in a diorama would be a interesting diversion!

as regards Ic engines Bert White made a lovely blackburn single cylinder motorcycle engine and rex acme motorcycle, as did a few other makers and designs in The Model Engineer... feel free to message me, Ill try to help with info.

Keep the great work up, Phill, I am sure we all have dark days, but my models keep me going too

regards vic
