Rhino poacher trampled to death by elephants then eaten by lions, wonderful sense of natural justice.

Cant help thinking if it had happened over here his family would sue the wildlife park and win compensation.

Actually I think the family would find it hard to gain compensation in this country unless it could be shown the park managers had definitely failed in some material way. Remember all those "No Win - No Fee" ads from ambulance-chasing agents, who were not lawyers but acted for lawyers, with both wanting to fleece the plaintiff's award? Most of them went bankrupt because so many claims were spurious.

This thread has nothing to do with model engineering or workshop activities. Suggest you post these sorts of unrelated things elsewhere.

This post appears under the heading of “Tea Room” which is the correct placing for frivolous and /or non engineering items.

Yes its nothing to do with the hobby. It just caught my eye and as in any tea room conversation I raised it.

I make no apology for posting this thread and hope it is not removed.

I imagine any club that strictly imposes a non engineering talk ban would be a boring place to be.

It's not political, it's not abusive its meant to highlight the destruction of wildlife by poaching.

If mr dayman had stood at the side of a rhino butchered for nothing more than its horn which is practically useless he would appreciate my posts motivation.

Unfortunately a few people seem to interpret this as anything goes, anywhere in the forums.

Oh I do not think it is a joking matter, and I was not making light of it.

The poor man who died was poaching to survive I guess, he certainly wont benefit to the tune of the big boys who export the product. Same story mentioned 1.6 million pounds worth of Rhino horn seized at Hong Kong airport. It is the people who make the horn so valuable that need dealing with, not the poor wretches who try to get by.

By the way this was discussed some weeks ago by other members at my club and no one called for a halt to the conversation.

It is most certainly not a joking matter . . . but maybe . . just maybe the message will get out to those who are considering carrying out such a despicable act in killing a beautiful wild animal for no more than a few hundred dollars (I actually doubt the poachers get anything like that amount) that they are in grave danger of being killed themselves, not just by the volunteer game wardens but also by a twist of fate from the animals defending themselves.

My wife and I were privileged to travel to South Africa last year and went on a trip to see the Elephants at a reserve (one the size of Wales !!) it was amazing, and we saw literally 100's of beautiful Elephants having fun in as near a natural environment as is possible, but . . . . . we were horrified and saddened to learn from our guide that they have to cut off the tusks as soon as they grow and keep them trimmed to stop the poachers from killing the animals (and that's in a game reserve)

So, although it is always sad when a human loses their life, I make no apology for thinking that if you play with fire, every now and then someone will get burnt !!!

There are more lawful ways to earn a daily crust. I am not an overly worried animal lover, but on a game preserve it's wrong. The animals won this one.

I might be missing something but from what i have heard on the news and read about it it seems the only things they found of the man was his trousers and skull , how do they determine that he was stomped on by an Elephant then eaten by lions with such little evidence ? There is the possibility that he was killed by another poacher and even the rangers have to be alert and careful that the poachers they are tracking don’t shoot them .

Do i feel sorry for this guy -no he was killing a nearly extinct animal for profit and the animals killed him to protect themselves - at least they eat what they kill !

But was he killing it for profit? Or just to survive in a country with 27 per cent unemployment and most jobs paying a pittance that allows you to live in a shanty town slum with no electricity, running water etc?

I don't blame the impoverished Africans for doing this. Most of us would kill our own granny for a feed if we had to live the way they do.

But the wealthy Chinese who pay big money for illegal rhino horn for "medicine" for limp d*cks and pay for illegal ivory for decorative carvings are to blame for creating the demand. They do have choices. Most Africans don't.

Nothing to do with puddings or empty spaces, the OED definition of 'desert' as used in this sense is: 'That in conduct or character which deserves reward or punishment'. The word shares the same French root as 'deserve'.

The other Desert is from Latin, 'desertus' meaning 'abandoned'.

Curious that 'Just Deserts' makes sense whichever definition is used, pudding, place of banishment, or deserving. However we pedants insist knowing the difference is absolutely essential. Is this why I don't have a girlfriend?

Reminds me of the picture of a certain prince kneeling by the side of a 1 ton water buffalo he had just shot, he didnt feel any pain though.
