Was at my local recycling centre today ,did my usual look in the scrap metal skip and spotted a 6" bench grinder that to me looked unused ,the wheels were brand new . I know the chaps that work there and asked if I could have it for the grinding wheels . Plugged it in when I got home and it worked a treat and vibration free .... wink

Sounds a good find, but I would check the wheels for cracks picked up on their adventures (take off and tap with a screwdriver, they should 'ring' if OK, if they sound dull, bin them).

I hear a lot of unpleasant tales about wheels 'exploding'.

Most, or perhaps all, commercial scrappies in the UK have monitoring facilities and reject any incoming consignment that triggers the alarm.

Cobalt 60 is a pretty powerful isotope, I know because we used them for gamma radiography, you wouldn’t want to be too near one for very long if it was out of its shielded container, can do loads of damage to human tissue. One hopes that no one was hurt by the mislaid isotope and that someone got their a—-e well and truly kicked.

Don't think there's much chance of that happening where I live to be honest .

Like my woodworking lathe.

Sorry, I've just checked again it's actually a Nova Chuck, I don't think it was made in Russia.

One man's scrap is another's raw material.

Look what Fred Dibnah did with material from his local scrapyard!

There's not too much scrap metal in the world; only when it's too small to hold, or already dark blue and curly.

Be careful for what you wish for. When we emigrated to France, there was no way I could take all my "Stock". I gave it away to a local traction engine / engineering club. They took 3 trailer loads of wood and metal that I has amassed over 20 years or so. Most of it came from work before the scrap lorry turned up (With permission from the works engineer of course). I got a whole load of cream painted steel bar (still have odd bits) which came from the frame work of the companies telephone switch room along with a sack of cad plated BSW bolts - not much use here in France !

SB5,

Was it just before November 5? Could they have made a good price from weighing in the metal not needed!smiley

Yeah, likely coveted and still helping people out, but just sayin’....

BSW nuts and bolts will hold things together wherever you are in the world. (Fully paid up hoarder)

It pains me to throw away material that "Might come in handy one day"

Yesterday I picked up an 8" milling vice from the skip. It was dismantled to make it light enough to get in the skip, and I couldn't find the clamp screw. Unfortunately I have a horrible feeling it's just too big for use on my Warco WMT 300. In fact it's barely light enough for me to lift onto the cross slide.

I was thinking of buying a vice last week, but wanted one 2.5x smaller at 8cm not 8in...

Regards

Richard

The Cobalt 60 story here:

There is also an intriguing story from the 90's "The Radioactive Boy Scout" who had dreams of building his own nuclear reactor. Didn't have any sense of the danger. A US "something to do with nuclear safety" agency had to remove a lot of contaminated material. More here:
