Welcome, Ross, your woodworking skills will stand you in good stead, machining metal is much the same basically.

Yes, except that metals don't have a habit of splitting along the grain.

Russell

No, but they can warp if you’re not careful.

I wouldn’t mind bidding on this, but unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to put it at the moment.

Hi Rod, if we’re talking about the N151.2-250-5E 1125 inserts, yes I would be willing to share!

Thread: Strange fault ML7
27/08/2022 13:28:06

Changing the motor direction is done by swapping the polarity of one of the windings (usually the start winding?). If there is leakage at one end of this winding or associated wiring there may not be enough leakage to operate the RCD when that end is connected to neutral, but there will when it’s connected to live. Neutral to earth faults will also trip the RCD if there is enough voltage rise of the neutral due to load or length of circuit.

Thread: Ajax AJ8 Milling Arbour removal
04/08/2022 19:09:21

d527b213-72f3-4156-9f51-b1e00e2ddd7e.jpegHi Nicholas, did you manage to remove the drawbar? I have a similar machine and the drawbar is easily removed by undoing the hexagon head (mines standard right hand thread, but yours maybe left hand) a few turns and then giving the end of it a tap with a soft faced hammer to loosen the far end as AJAX says. The arbour end has a 3/4 in’s plain shaft that fits into the mandrel.

I’ve made a couple of fittings to fit into the end of the mandrel, one that will take a fly cutter and another threaded to match my lathe spindle nose.

Thread: How Many People Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb on the Forum?
17/02/2021 15:09:07

And Neil missed

1 who said the OP maybe shouldn't be changing the bulb in the first place but should be ringing the local distribution network operator first to check there isn't a power outage in the area. Otherwise he could end up changing all of his bulbs (and all of his neighbours as well).

Thread: What machine tools are these?
28/01/2021 19:30:43

I've got one of these too. It looks like a NAMCO thread chaser grinding fixture. I bought mine thinking I repurpose into something useful. At the moment it's a doorstop. Sorry the picture isn't too clear, but the photo in the bottom right shows it being used.

Thread: Some big tools
22/01/2019 14:13:36

Posted by Phil Whitley on 21/01/2019 20:55:25:

Colin, well maybe 1KW would be enough for a venezuelan consumer, but without getting into KvA, most UK consumers, whose incoming cutout is fused at 100amps have almost 21KW available. which sounds like a lot till you consider that some electric showers are 10KW!

1kW per household is not far off if taken for a large enough number of houses. The population of Goole is around 20,000. Google tells me that the average occupancy for England is 2.4 per household. That makes for about 8,300 households. Last time I checked maximum demand in Goole was about 10MW if you removed all the industry, but that still included commercial load, shops etc. (I also used to work for YEB/YEDL/NorthernPowerGrid.)

Let's not have any cheap shots about Goole, please. smiley I don't live there but it's not as bad popular opinion would have you believe.

Like my woodworking lathe.

Sorry, I've just checked again it's actually a Nova Chuck, I don't think it was made in Russia.

Thread: Drummond Shaper Feed
14/01/2018 15:51:36

Hi ndiy , sorry for the delay in replying, I'll pm you with sketches of the drive on my Drummond shortly. But in answer to your query I can get the movement on mine to vary between one tooth and four teeth depending on the travel of the ram and the position of the pivot in the slot on the drive plate. The cross slide moves about 5thou per tooth. The maximum I normally use is 10thou per stroke.

Thread: Private Messages

Thanks for that Jeff, I'll try that next time.

31/12/2017 19:02:44

I've just had to restrain myself form throwing my IPad out of the window. Having spent over half an hour composing a reply to a private message and pressing the send button nothing happened. I pressed it again and still nothing. I've checked the sent box and only the blank message, that I sent in error at the start of the process, is there. Having navigated away the message is now lost. Grrrrrr.

What doesn't help is that as soon as I start typing the window drops down to the original message and I can't see what I'm typing. What am I doing wrong? Is there a maximum length of message? After a bit of a struggle I did manage to attach a picture.

Going to the pub soon, John.

PS sorry I forgot, Happy New Year everybody.

PPS if you read this , not done it yet, I'll have another go tomorrow.

Thread: Drummond Shaper Restore
11/10/2017 18:33:14

While we're on about Drummond shapers, does anyone recognise this shaper? It looks like a Drummond but does not match any of the photographs on Tony Griffith's website. The main body is different as is the clapper box.

The handle is not original, it has been cobbled together using a piece of threaded rod and tubing.

Thread: Bright Mild Steel vs Black Mild Steel

And just in case there's still any doubt here's a picture. It's difficult to see but the steel on both sides of the saw cut is warped away from the cut. This was to be a tool holder for a shaper.

The Pirelli bars are probably aluminium solder for sweating connectors onto aluminium cable cores. Not used now it's all compression fittings or shear off connectors.

Thread: Potts Drill Grinding Jig
20/06/2016 17:05:28

Hi Roger/Bill, my apologies for not responding sooner. I tidied away the drawings for the Potts jig some time ago and it's take a while to find them. Also this is my third attempt at posting this reply.

Roger I struggle with Yahoo groups. I thought that as I was a member of the Drummond lathe group I would be able to get to the link you posted. Unfortunately not, I have to be a member of the Quorn Owners group as well. If all else fails I'll pursue that. Thanks for posting the link anyway.

Roger here is the detail of the detent as per per the drawing from Wokings:

As for the instructions:

Hope these are of some help.

Thread: Stuck chuck
20/06/2016 16:28:05

How about warming the chuck, with a hot air gun, until it's nearly too hot to touch and then squirting one of those freeze sprays, that DIY stores sell for freezing water pipes, into the spindle morse taper? You may have to blow warm air in afterwards to take away any condensation that forms inside the spindle.
