The Model Engineer and Electrician

I have just found a 1919 copy of The Model Engineer and Electrician. When did it change it's name?

When someone noticed an above-average rate of electrocutions among model-engineers.

Not quite sure, but in 1923 the heading was "The Model Engineer".

I'v got vol 1, 1898 as a bound book, a major model type was electrical generators, and a open crank gas engine with hot tube ignition with the idea of building that to run your lathe.

Thor is correct with his 1923 'Front' heading of "The Model Engineer" (a Journal of Small Power Engineering) but this heading was also being used in 1922.

The reason for the confusion being (I suspect) that the 'inside' pages (even in 1923) were still being headed by "The Model Engineer and Electrician" - so both 'titles' were in fact being used - although the 'main' title had been simplified. I haven't bothered to look forward (or backwards) to track when the front header changed (or when the inside one was bought into line) but it seems there was a transition period over time to the simpler title...

The Wiki for MEW is, understandably, even lighter! I wonder whether the Wiki author(s) are members of this forum.

An internet search on "wiki model engineer" throws up interesting articles on Tom Walshaw, Martin Evans and Stuart Turner.

Much of the early (turn of century) contents were concerned with 'new-fangled' electrics, especially generators. From memory, in one of my 1900+ volumes there was a reader's query as to whether his large block of well-seasoned wood would be suitable as a generator core. Also a report of a U.S. travelling 'snake-oil salesman' who was selling electric shock treatment as a cure for various ills. He couldn't understand why his 'patients' were emerging with black faces! It tiurned out that the illumination in his treatment tent was provided by oil lamp and the induced static was 'decorating' his customers with lamp black.

Plus ca change ... or not??

Maybe Percival Marshall CIMechE was having an identity crisis in the 1920s. In 1929 the mast head now read:-

Perhaps it ought to be revised again to 'The Model Engineer but mainly about steam trains'.
