Thread: Model engineers - enlisted in war efforts?
03/01/2019 22:04:00

In July 1915 ME reports the formation of The Amateur Ordnance Volunteer Association by the Rev. W.W.Pitchford of Lamport Rectory near Northampton. This organisation receives almost issue by issue mentions up to April 1917. This last article shows it to have had many branches in the country, and mentions Percival Marshall as being on the Finance Committee. It reports the supply of 5,000 fuse sockets and 47,500 fuse screws weekly just for Munitions Ministry, with smaller amounts for private firms.

WW2 does not seem to have been catered for in the same way, but, in addition to Roderick's stirrup pump, a gun tripod for use by the Home Guard was in the February 1941 issue. The Sten Carbine was described in January 1943 with ways to improve it in June of the same year.

Thread: Vacuum pump
25/05/2018 10:26:28

Has anyone made and fitted a crosshead vacuum pump to any 5"g. GWR double framed 4-4-0 locomotive?

Guidance on how to attach it to the inner frame leaving it accessible for future maintenance, would be appreciated.

Thank you - Chris.

Thread: Kittiwake Major - A Bit of a Mystery!
24/05/2016 19:54:09

Neil has helped me post this link showing the records found in the ME Index, when searched for "Kittiwake". I have removed two that referred to a high wing monoplane.

Thread: Nitrile ball pushed past its seat

Nitrile balls should sit on a 90 deg. conical seat with an outlet bore diameter of not more than 60% of that of the ball.

Mark,

The crankshaft drawing appears on page 279 of ME volume 146 (7 March 1980) and shows a throw of 3/4". Page 538 (2 May 1980) of the same volume shows the twin cylinder block with bores of 1 3/8".

Thread: Heilan Lassie
21/06/2015 09:47:22

LBSC started to describe the building of the boiler for "Hielan' Lassie" in ME Issue 2372 (Vol. 95 October 24 1946). A general arrangement drawing and details of how the barrel and wrapper are joined appear in that issue. How to test the boiler is in Issue 2383 (Vol. 96 January 9 1947).

These articles were reprinted starting in Issue 3091 (Vol. 123 October 6 1960), finishing in Issue 3103 (Vol. 123 December 29 1960).

Thread: Trying to recall a 7 plank (coal) wagon from a ME exhibition
29/05/2015 09:30:30

You are probably remembering Alan Crossfield's 1 1/16" scale seven-plank coal wagon.

It was first exhibited at the 63rd International Model Engineer & Modelling Exhibition held at Olympia in December 1993 / January 1994 when it was awarded a Silver Medal. A picture and brief description appear in ME No. 3964 of the 4th March 1994.

It was again exhibited at the 64th International Model Engineer & Modelling Exhibition held at Olympia in December 1994 / January 1995 . A picture and brief description appear in ME No. 3988 of the 3rd. March 1995.

Alan's wagon was however, painted, and you may also be remembering another picture of a 7 plank wagon that appeared in ME 3991 of 21st April 1995 in a report on model engineering societies in North Wales. That was under construction and unpainted.

You asked this question in September 2012, Nathan.

You need Model Engineer Volume 159 (2 October 1987), Issue 3810, Page 379, "Tricks of the Trade" by John Day. Your father's name appears in the second line under the sub-heading "About Milling Machines" on page 380.

A profile of him, with a picture, appears under the heading "Who's Who in Model Engineering", No.29, in ME Volume 77 (22 July 1937), Issue 1889, Page 74.

He contributed some sixty nine articles and letters to the ME between 1905 and 1938, including the thirty four installment "Metal-Craft in the School Workshop" series.

Thread: Information required on 'ROBLIN' cylinder casting
30/08/2014 10:00:00

In the December 24 1903 edition of the "Model Engineer and Electrician" magazine is an article entitled "An Enthusiastic Model Locomotive Maker", by Henry Greenly no less. In it, he describes the work of a Mr W.C.Roblin which includes an inch scale six-coupled goods locomotive with Joy valve gear. This does bear a resemblance to LBSC's "Minx" design.

Before the era of LBSC and readily available castings, Mr Roblin could have made his own patterns and may have decided to incorporate his name in the casting. The article mentions his work in the ironmongery trade and his use of commercial gas fittings, and one of his other models was a G.W.R. single express locomotive.

Thread: Simplex double acting water pump
28/03/2014 23:39:34

The original 'Simplex' locomotive water pump is detailed on page 650 of Volume 133 of the ME (7 July 1967) and if built to the drawing, will pump.

The feed pump assembly is shown on page 651 and if built to these and other relevant drawings, the outlet clack housing will foul the weighshaft. A solution is to move the pump forward 1/8".

Again, if the locomotive is built to the drawings, it is possible to detach the pump from the frame stretcher and then remove it from below.

Does not 'double acting' mean delivering on both strokes; if it does then the 'Simplex' pump is double acting.

I regret not being able to find the 'avalanche of letters'. I would like to read them.

Your boiler diagram is reproduced on page 523 of issue 1777. Whilst a design for it was not published in ME, you may find the accompanying text useful.
