Minilathe changewheels don't fit

Why did you stone the key, far better to enlarge the depth of the keyway in the gear. File will do but broach would be better

If you can't ream them to the size you need then bore them on the lathe

New lathe? Take this up with the supplier.

I have a feeling that someone with fat fingers may have deleted the first post by accident as well as typing gibberish and double posting it to boot

The problem is that us moderators see another line below each post and "edit" is next to "delete" so easy to click the wrong one and the software does not ask you to confirm the deletion or have an option to retain deleted postings so they can be reinstated. Add in the fact that JS may have been posting via his phone and mistakes can happen.

I think I can guess what this is about;.......

Mini-lathes are made by two different Chinese factories, at least as far as the lathes that come to to the UK are concerned. These are 'Sieg' and 'Real Bull'. Although the lathes are essentially the same design there are some detail differences, one of which is the change wheels. Internal diameter is the same but the key-way cut-out causes a problem if you wish to fit Sieg wheels on a Real Bull machine.

You need to enlarge the key-way slot 1mm wider to fit and the best way that i have found is to carefully cut the sides of the slot away using a scalpel, while repeatedly trying for a fit...... The wheels are made of a 'delrin' type of material and abrasive methods are tricky and difficult so firm cuts are needed. Once you have done a wheel it gets much easier to do.

The only source of wheels i could find in UK for my Real Bull lathe (Chester Conquest) was Arceurotrade who only have the Seig wheels.

Original post has 12.03mm shaft and about 11.80 bore in the changewheels which was the main problem but top of keyway was tight after trying to open up the hole with a reamer which did not work well due to keyway.

Yes, the change wheels are quite a tight fit but CAN be 'urged' onto the studs!....it helps to lightly chamfer the inside edge of the wheel bores. The key-way slots are the same height for both makes of wheel but the width is considerably different.

Why dont they make sure that the wheels fit,before they sell them? That,s like buying a car and then finding that the wheels dont fit. There is no excuse for that kind of thing,no matter where they are made.

......Probably because there's a difference in the perception of 'fit' between the Chinese production engineers and a model engineer living in the UK...... the wheels DO fit, albeit with some persuasion, provided you use either the right make of wheel or some 'remedial'.......

As per JS's post the plastic they are made from moves so they may fit in the factory but could expand or contract while sitting in a shed workshop that can be freezing in winter and very hot in summer.

I am sure the changewheels that Arceurotrade sell do fit the Seig machines they sell, if they do not you can complain.

But if you try them on a Real Bull you takes your choice. Bit like trying to mend a BMW with VW parts!!

Yes, Real Bull and SEIG mini lathes are the same basic design, but not identical, as as attempted to explain above although real 'Real Bull' are OK there are cheap 'Unreal Bull' lathes brought in by some minor importers/via ali express that aren't up to scratch. There also appear (in Australia at least) to be a few sources of machine made from spares (or even the reject bins of the better factories).
