23 forum posts | Hi folks Are there any Dore Westbury owners/builders out there who could offer some guidance/tips for taking the planetary pulley section appart? It's my first mill and I can't seem to find much info on it. I didn't know about the condition of the bushings till after I got it home, though after sticking a dial just about everywhere, I can at least say that they're the only problem with it, a good clean, a new set of bushings and she'll be right as rain again. Here's how the lower half looked as it was, you can see where most of the original bushings went, both sides had a build-up of flakes around the edges and in corners: It was easier to see how close things came to permanent damage, the one side looks to be worn down to almost nothing. I searched for ages but couldn't find out what the bushings were made of, I hazarded a guess at brass, but not 100% on that. The lower half doesn't look like it will present much problem as far as replacing the bushing goes, simple press out/press in job, but the planetary half is beyond me. I've taken a step back from my usual "have at it" approach having discovered how scarce these casting are, so I'm in no hurry to do something brash this early into proceedings. I removed the four small bolts on top after taking this pic, but it didn't seem to do much: I'm guessing the four ?brass pins may have something to do with it, but how to deal with the thing is beyond me at the moment so any help would be most appreciated. |

![]() 9 forum posts | Hi. I'm an owner of a Dore Westbury miller as well though I'm sorry to say not an experienced one -at least not yet-, so I can't answer your questions in detail. It seems like yours is a MK1 model and I just had a look at the building instructions and the bushings are just referred to as "porous bronze bushes".
P.s May I suggest that you visit the yahoo dore westbury group where you can find plans and info on these versatile millers. |

Would sintered bronze bushes (oilite) be a suitable substitute? Edited By Brian Oldford on 22/05/2017 16:48:16 |

2319 forum posts 13 photos | I couldn't see the photos guess that's my fault, does one have to log into photo bucket? Anyway I made one of these beasts some 30 odd years ago, bushes were sintered bronze from memory, brass will not be any good, again from memory I think the gear[s] are held on by circlips. Tony |

23 forum posts | My apologies, wasn't sure how to attach the pics (was using android mode which didn't help). Thank you for the replies gents, sintered bronze it is then, and I shall definitely check out the the yahoo group.

2319 forum posts 13 photos | Toneless, Thanks, those pictures bring back happy memories of my build, actually nearer 40 years than 30, scary! I'm pretty sure they supplied the oilite bush [s] ready made & I had to degrease them to allow the Loctite to work. Obviously oil fill again after fitting. Tony

![]() 9 forum posts | Canyon Wren, when you do repair your gearbox housing, please let us know. Also a couple photos of your DW would be nice. Even though it now seems like a piece of machine history, it's still a very versatile and capable miller. Good luck having it up and running soon. |

![]() 9 forum posts | When you reply in a message, there is a palette of options on the top. You just have to choose the "image" icon, it's in the top row, third from the end. Insert the link and here you go... P.s It looks to be a very nice Mark1 model... I love the handwheels, I dare to say, they look way better than the stock ones!

23 forum posts | Not sure about old though, she's a whippersnapper next to my 1930s flat belt Grayson lathe ♡ Runout was an astonishing 1.4mm when I got her, managed to whittle it down to .1mm (.003 inch), Not bad for a total beginner and an old lathe. Edited By Canyon Wren on 23/05/2017 01:29:55 |

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | Tony, it's best not to use Loctite on oilite bushes, the Loctite fills the space where the oil is supposed to be. The bushes are made slightly over size, and when they are pressed into the correct size hole the bore closes to the nominal size for the shaft, this is enough to retain the bush. If worse comes to worse, the interior of the bearing housing can be knurled to reduce the diameter, that's not always easy, or possible. Ian S C |

23 forum posts | This is all great info guys, Thanks
I found a perfect oilite for the base which is 1" x 1.1/8" x 1" bore, but no 2" with the same ID/OD. There's one with a 1.1/4" so may get that one and skim it to size if I can't find an exact match. |

Canyon When I rebuilt my DW some years ago I replaced all the oilite bushes, and I sourced correctly sized parts at very reasonable prices from Ashley Power in Poole. Website at www.ashleypower.co.uk. They don't seem to list imperial sizes in their online store, but you can order them by phone.or email. Hth Mike
