Dore Westbury Mk2 drive pulley repair

Hi.

I'm an owner of a Dore Westbury miller as well though I'm sorry to say not an experienced one -at least not yet-, so I can't answer your questions in detail.

It seems like yours is a MK1 model and I just had a look at the building instructions and the bushings are just referred to as "porous bronze bushes".

P.s May I suggest that you visit the yahoo dore westbury group where you can find plans and info on these versatile millers.

Would sintered bronze bushes (oilite) be a suitable substitute?

I couldn't see the photos guess that's my fault, does one have to log into photo bucket? Anyway I made one of these beasts some 30 odd years ago, bushes were sintered bronze from memory, brass will not be any good, again from memory I think the gear[s] are held on by circlips.

Thanks, those pictures bring back happy memories of my build, actually nearer 40 years than 30, scary! I'm pretty sure they supplied the oilite bush [s] ready made & I had to degrease them to allow the Loctite to work.

Obviously oil fill again after fitting.

Canyon Wren, when you do repair your gearbox housing, please let us know. Also a couple photos of your DW would be nice.

Even though it now seems like a piece of machine history, it's still a very versatile and capable miller. Good luck having it up and running soon.

When you reply in a message, there is a palette of options on the top. You just have to choose the "image" icon, it's in the top row, third from the end. Insert the link and here you go...

P.s It looks to be a very nice Mark1 model... I love the handwheels, I dare to say, they look way better than the stock ones!

Not sure about old though, she's a whippersnapper next to my 1930s flat belt Grayson lathe ♡

Runout was an astonishing 1.4mm when I got her, managed to whittle it down to .1mm (.003 inch), Not bad for a total beginner and an old lathe.

Tony, it's best not to use Loctite on oilite bushes, the Loctite fills the space where the oil is supposed to be. The bushes are made slightly over size, and when they are pressed into the correct size hole the bore closes to the nominal size for the shaft, this is enough to retain the bush. If worse comes to worse, the interior of the bearing housing can be knurled to reduce the diameter, that's not always easy, or possible.

I found a perfect oilite for the base which is 1" x 1.1/8" x 1" bore, but no 2" with the same ID/OD. There's one with a 1.1/4" so may get that one and skim it to size if I can't find an exact match.

When I rebuilt my DW some years ago I replaced all the oilite bushes, and I sourced correctly sized parts at very reasonable prices from Ashley Power in Poole. Website at www.ashleypower.co.uk. They don't seem to list imperial sizes in their online store, but you can order them by phone.or email.
