Hi

I have tried doing a search on here but the search function seems next to useless.

I am torn between doing this....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDiY_w_Rrv0

Or trying to make something along the lines of this...

http://www.gadgetbuilder.com/DrillSharp.html

I doubt if I email John he would just send me the plans though.

Cheers for looking

Dave.

I was hoping someone would come up with a drill sharpening system using an ER32 collet block. Its such an obvious starting point IMO.

Hi Dave,

Drop John Moran an Email, he is very helpful. I've built the 4-6 facet drill sharpener and I'm very happy with it. I also made a jig to sharpen slot drils and end mills.

It is a bit fiddly to set up, but once you have got your head around it, it becomes very obvious.

I've just looked on the Gadget Builder web site and discovered that my grinder is pictured there, near the bottom of the page.

Maybe Having "Faking it" on the cover used gives an idea of the DVDs sourceangry 2

I have removed the link but will let the thread remain.

Regarding the ebay link, I have seen CDs of MEW from several sellers, but they are always nos 1 to 163 which was in May 2010.

Which makes me think the different sellers are the same person. You report the one you see, but the others are still there, meanwhile the seller invents another persona ready for when one of the others is reported.

Meanwhile, can I direct the OP to MEW no 142 (Sep 2008) where Harold Hall makes a 4-facet drill sharpening jig.  So it is probably also on Harold's website at www.homews.co.uk

If you are unsuccessful, I have an idea that D A G Brown wrote an article, with drawings, on making a jig for 4 Facet Grinding of small diameter drills. Possibly some time ago in M E ?

Hi Vic,

I made an end mill sharpening fixture based upon an ER32 collet block and use this for 4 facet sharpening of drills and seems to work ok.

The only problem is that to keep overhang to a minimum your only option is to grip the flutes in the collet but it seems to work ok. I've sharpened drills up to 20mm successfully although I'm not sure they still cut precisely on-size.

I made an ER25 collet block for sharpening drills on my Worden, using the angled base of the original drill grinding fixture. But it was rather large, and the clamp nut fouled the table, until turned down, so made up an ER20 version. This system needs a small square to be used to set the cutting edge vertical before grinding. The range of collets from 1mm to 13mm suffices for all my drills, Being the ER system, the collets tolerate Imperial, Number, Letter as well as Metric sizes.

After breaking several #76 drills I used a high power loupe to examine the one remaining and was appalled to see how badly it had been sharpened. Since the broken drills had come from the same supplier, in the same packet, it was no wonder they had broken.

A friend had made D.A.G.Brown's small 4-facet sharpening jig which I borrowed. The newly sharpened drill bored all the remaining 35 holes perfectly, so perfectly that I read the original article, and the subsequent one for medium sized drills, and decided to design a combined jig for both the sizes described by DAGB. This PDF contains the drawings I created for both jigs in one. The basic design is DAGB's, I just combined both sizes into one unit. I also designed a special jig to help saw the small drill holders with a piercing saw instead of using the special tool used by DAGB. I hope you find it useful.

Gary

Thanks for posting the PDF of your version of the jig, it is something I am definitely going to make as I am fed up with sharpening 0.5mm drills freehand! Not having seen the 'DAGB' article though I'm having difficulty 'seeing' what the main body actually looks like.

Are your views on A and B, some sort of isometric representation? The dimensions shown are relative to centrelines but it looks like you have drawn the part rotated in mid air rather than it being a rectangular block sat on a horizontal surface.

It would be great if you could you possibly post a photograph of the jig as it would be a real help.
