286 forum posts 36 photos | I need a short length of 1/16 inch square silver steel for a clock project. Tried all my usual sources without success. Anyone know where to get some? Mike |

286 forum posts 36 photos | Thanks for all the replies. It looks like I!'s probably not available. At least not in the very small quantity I need at a sensible price. I need it for a maintaining spring in a clock barrel. What matters is stiffness after hardening. Doing some sums just now it looks as though a round section would need to be about 20% greater in diameter than the side dimension of a square bar for the same stiffness. So substituting a round bar for the 1/16 square bar would means I would need a round bar 0.075 diameter. This is pretty close to 2mm, which is readily available size. So I'll go with that. Mike |

![]() 1285 forum posts 353 photos | Hi Mike, I have plenty of 1/8" square silver steel. I cant see me needing much of it for any future projects. I can send you whatever length you need. You can then mill or file it down to size. PM me if you want some. Cheers, Julian |

Why not file down a bit of round rod to suit ? . +1 for that The filing of squares is a very useful horological skill. Here: on a reduced scale, I supect, is a good demonstration **LINK** http://great-british-watch.co.uk/how-to-file-a-square-on-a-cylinder/ Relevance will of course depend on your interpretation of 'a short length' MichaelG.
