My dear wife wants to buy me a Diamond Tool Holder to fit my ml7 for my birthday, can anyone advise which is the correct size, 8mm or 9.5mm? I use one of those Chronos quick change tool posts.

I'm using the 8mm on my Myford, this is the size that Eccentric Engineering said was the correct one for the Myford when I rang them up.

Lucky you,

If you look on the eccentric engineering website they recommend the 8mm tool for a Myford with a Quick change toolpost.

You're right there Nei! My wife is one of those rare partners who fully understands the value of good tools and equipment and who actually encourages me to buy them. It helps that our daughter is currently studying at Birmingham to be a silversmith and I use the workshop to make tools for her. Just finished converting a cheap Dremel clone and an old set of photographic bellows to a precision micro drill press, all using the lathe and milling machine. Much cheaper and far more accurate than the commercial version.

My wife, like yours, encourages me in the hobby and says " If you want a ??????? just get one. Now this may seem to be the ideal situation but, of course, she too has hobbies - including knitting sewing, dressmaking, quilting etc. We had a trip to the hospital this morning and, just by chance (?) we passed the fabric shop on the way home. No - that's wrong we went INTO the fabric shop on the way home ......and departed with some components for the next quilt!

I have the best system- my wife goes and earns money, I stay at home and spend it. She does not read this thread.

The only comment once made by my wife was "Your metalworking tools seem to cost a lot more than my woodturning ones".

But I kept her well supplied with the latest woodturning innovations.

Well, my dear wife did buy me the Pair of Eccentric Engineering diamond tool holders for my birthday and I must say I'm impressed by how well they work. A quick test on a piece of aluminium bar and a chunk of mystery steel both gave impressive results. Very easy to set up and they will take much deeper cuts than I expected with good qualiy finishes on both pieces. I suspect these will become my default tools for much of the turning I do!

My delightful daughter is now back at uni but left a parcel for me containing gifts from her brother (who has just moved to the Royal School of Signals to train as a comms systems engineer) and herself. Beth haunts car boot sales and as well as two bars of 90% cocoa solids chocolate, and a pack of high quality coffee (my major weaknesses!) she had found 3m of link belt suitable for my ML7 and a mint condition Mercer 0.0001" dti. Smart girl!

I am a convert to diamond tool holders and have used them on two lathes with both square and round HSS toolbits for a couple of years.

Last week I got round to sharpening and fitting the "Stellite 100" toolbits that I had stashed away into my tool holders. They work even better now, if you have not tried using Stellite I would recommend it to anyone.

I've got some 1/4" round carbide to use in my tool holder but it's tough to sharpen even on a green grit wheel. It. does prove though that you can cut even tough materials with a Tangential tool holder with the right bit.

I'm sure you are writing this up for MEW!

I hadn't thought of writing this up, the drill press isn't particularly pretty and my daughter has it with her in Birmingham now as it's better than the one she has been using. If I can get it back I'll try to do something.
