Many moons ago when Taiwan were the source of "hobby" lathes they used to come with soft bearings. disgust Maybe the idea has spread to other areas.

I have some stainless ones that I suspect would cut and machine that easily.

As Doubleboost says, he bought them from Ebay.

Why does he seem so surprised ?

It is precisely what I came to expect from ebay sellers.

Sadly, what started out as a good selling platform became flooded

with fleamarket fly by nights who have zero morality.

I think you're in danger of tarring all with the same brush!

Ebay is just like any other market place - there are good sellers and bad sellers. Once you find a good one, stick with them, just as you would with a good shop in the high street.

Cobbs.

Yes Cobbs, that's a fair point.

I became dissappointed, over time, with what I was receiving.

As you say, the danger there is tarring everyone with the same brush

and that isn't fair.

I suppose I was (still am, on occasion), the sort who's always looking

for something as cheap as possible. In the end, you still always get

what you pay for.

Maybe Doubleboost had succumbed to a box of 500 bearings for 10 P

inc postage from Mars cheeky

I think I bought some of those bearings too off Amazon.

10 608ZZ Double Metal Shields Deep Groove Ball Bearings (shipped from china) for £3.79

I thought it was worth a try but in effect I wasted my £3.79 - they came and were as crummy as Doubleboosts

A very nice 12-inch to the foot scale model of a bearing.

Where do they get these things from? Do the boys on night shift run a few bars of scrap mild steel through the bearing making machine while the boss is not looking then take them home in their lunchboxes to sell on eBay?

They probably just forgot to heat treat some and assigned them as scrap from their main line. Then some scrappie or the firm's accountant decided they could make just a little more by selling them unbranded and neither knew the reason they were scrap amongst others that were more obviously defective or just sub standard.

It happens in all industries to some extent. To fulfil and order for 5000 branded tee shirts they will make 5100 in case of rejects. The extra 100 new or the rejects all appear in the bazaar late on. I walked through Seoul and saw our company uniform jackets on sale among a thousand other football strips and obscure company logos.

Pity nobody has mentioned the actual seller's name so lots of other unsuspecting buyers will be caught.

I generally get mine of simplybearings. They offer a range of prices and sources on most sizes. I have bought stainless off ebay and they seem to be ok but it's a fact that they are unlikely to be as good as hardened ones. I believe they are generally just machined for one thing and not as hard as they could be as well.

enlightenedMaybe the company that made these is called ABEC-7

+1 for Simplybearings. Good prices, very quick postage and if you are stuck and ring up, the sales staff REALLY know their bearings!

I'll plug Arc here as I don't think any of the other ME suppliers specialise in bearings - Ketan was a bearing supplier before he got into the model engineering side. I was most gutted when I found out that the bearings I replaced on a washing machine would have cost about 1/20 as much from him

Cobbs.

Very true, even the most respected brands can be worse than people are letting on, price is not always an indicator of quality.

Just think about measuring equipment, everyone goes after named brands, so no matter how good your vernier is, you can't compete with them so you have to price it rock bottom, just to get people looking.

(Sorry for DP)

But to add to that, clearly at £3.50 for 10, these bearings are not going to be brilliant by any means, i suspect a company in england couldnt put one together for £3.50 let alone 10. Just think about how much work needs to go into that to get it made decently, the price would be more like £10 each.

I think it's just a case of this guy expecting too much from it, as interesting though it may be, there were not any stated requirements in terms of tolerancing or heat treatment, they were just sold as "metal bearings" doesnt mean they are going to be world class bearings for 35p each!

They`re probably meant for things like skateboards, and other non precision uses despite whatever tolerances are stated on them. You can buy them over here nearly as cheap .(probably all from similar Chinese sources)

http://www.bearingsrus.co.uk/bearings/skateboard-bearing/608-z-abec7-skateboard

One thing that irritates me on ebay is the amount of Chinese sellers pretending to be based in the UK, when the stuff is obviously coming from China.

And it isnt just the Chinese, I recently  bought a new Toshiba  inverter off ebay and despite being a supposed a UK registered company in Manchester it came posted internationally from Brescia in Italy. With a note ,if anything was wrong with the purchase please return to Italy. Luckily it works fine.
