Thread: Wavy Washer Supplier |

If you are in need of a wavy washer that is compressible, Caleb Components may have what you need. These are listed as wave spring washers. No connection other than a very satisfied customer. One thing to note - the part numbers are nominal so order slightly oversize if the washer is to fit on a shaft. No link but type Caleb Components into a search engine and you should find the website.

Thread: QC tool posts |

Hi Roy, I use the 100 series toolpost and holders on my Boxford 10-20 lathe, 11 inch swing. They take up to 14mm shank tools. The toolpost model I have is the 111 which you can find on the Arc Euro website with all the dimensions. The purists may tell you that the 111 (wedge) type toolpost gives better repeatability than the 100 (piston) type. Whether that will affect your work only you will know.... The problem you may have with the larger toolpost is not being able to get the tool low enough to be on centre height. Again, the Arc Euro website gives details of how to determine this, also mentioned by Thor above. No connection with Arc, etc. John |

Thread: Slightly large lathe |

Hi Peter, I have a Boxford STS 10-20 (often generically listed as X-10) with metric dials and can highly recommend it. It will cut metric and inch threads with use of a set of changewheels - these seem to go missing but are available. Changing the changewheels is very straightforward. The D1-3 chuck locking system is very practical, makes changing chucks a breeze and allows the use of operations in reverse. There is a bush that goes into the spindle to convert to MT3 if you want to use collets or tooling in the bore. Top speed of just over 1000 rpm is no limitation to me, and if you keep your other lathe that will give you the higher speeds. Tony Griffiths' site 'Lathes.co.uk' does a very good write-up on the STS variants - listed under Late Model Geared Head Boxfords, John |

Journeyman mentioned the grind being four faceted. Maybe he got a different batch, but mine were not four faceted, more point thinned I think:

I bought diesel fuel from Progress Aero Works, Macclesfield, many years ago. Looking on their website I can't see any mention of fuel, but a phone call may elicit a result. https://www.eifflaender.com/ John

Thread: New mill vice which one |

Posted by Steviegtr on 22/02/2021 20:55:03:
Just had another look on arc. The SG cast iron ones look very nice & would have the benefit of being able to move back or forward due to having slots as opossed to fixing points. mmmm. Any one got one of those models. ARC No 130-040-03500. Steve. Steve, I have that vice on my generic 626 mill. I find it very good indeed. One of the reasons for choosing that vice was the (relatively) low profile, as I suffered from lack of headroom with taller vices. You will need to supply your own clamps. John |

Adapters are available - here is an example but rather pricey: Link I am sure I bought one from Arc but can't find one in the current catalogue. |
Thread: Changes to Fusion 360 Terms |

Here's another look at what's changing, and what some of the alternatives are: Fusion 360 changes . No connection etc. I don't think the changes will affect me, and if they do then the paid version at £22/month (over 3 years) is not outrageous, in my opinion. |

I use F360 as a personal, not for profit user. The 'free ride' is most definitely not over. I spoke to F360 support who pointed me to this blog Fusion 360 Blog which explains exactly what is happening. I was concerned about the reference to 10 documents, but the link above explains that this refers to 10 active documents; when you reach the limit of 10, simply archive an active document - make it inactive - and you are able to work on another document. All documents remain saved as archive documents, always accessible. As SOD says above, Autodesk is not a charity. However they will continue to provide a product that will do most of what hobbyists need, for free.

Thread: Myford Apron Dovetail Damage |
15/07/2020 10:37:46 |
1. The saddle is still useable. The loss of bearing surface is negligible. The gib will only be damaged if it snags on a sharp edge of the hole. See below. 2, Yes. I would use an oilstone to smooth any rough edges, clean thoroughly and reassemble. Good news I hope! John |

Brian, Glad you have had offers of help. I am in N Yorks so not a million miles from you . I would be more that happy to drill your bolts, or even make some bespoke ones. I have an excuse to drive up to Newcastle so could collect if that suits. All the best, John |
Thread: Boxford 280 spindle nose runout |
23/06/2020 19:09:55 |
Hi Gav, I have a Boxford 10-20, or X10 as Boxford refer to them, but essentially the same as yours I believe. The bad news is that last night I clocked the runout on the face of the spindle, and it was as near zero as I could see with a 0.01mm clock. Which leads me to suspect that you have a problem with your spindle. I have adjusted my spindle bearings but have never taken the spindle out. Unfortunately I think that if you have a bent spindle you are never going to get good results, although I agree that bespoke back plates for each chuck, assembled repeatably each time, will be your next best solution. I would, however, suggest rigorous re measurement of that runout ensuring you are not picking up any tiny chips or dings. ATB, John |
