Who sells horizontal arbor milling cutters?

Having had a brief browse of the likes of arceurotrade, chronos etc I cannot seem to find plain looking arbor/key way mounted milling cutters for a horizontal milling machine.

Please could someone suggest/link sellers of these various shape cutters.

MSC do side & face cutters as well as various profiles like concave & convex to fit a Horz mill

As does Tap & Die Co or C.R. Tools. I don't know if they have minimum orders though.

Occasionally brand new ones appear on ebay. Machine traders like Home and Workshop sell used ones so probably also sometimes pickup unused ones with a machine. Might be worth asking for a specific size.

Try gandmtools - bought lots of various sizes from them for my Senior horizontal mill.

Tends to be a bundle of them on ebay. For some reason these tend to be less popular, i'm pretty sure HBM would've started making them, pretty much isn't a tool they won't make.

Sadly, I think you might struggle to find 1/2" bore cutters for your Flexispeed mill

Not only that but the distance between the arbor and the over-arm limits the cutter diameter to something in the order of 3½ inches. I found a few on eBay.

By the way, C-B, I can't seem to access your photo? Is your mill the version with back-gear and the motor in the base-box? I have a Mk 1 and need to contrive a counter-shaft and motor mount before I can use it.

There should be nothing against putting a bush in the bore of a cutter with a larger bore.

Thanks all for the input. I alway appreciate hearing from those more experienced than myself.

Now that I've had a chance to unpack my Flexispeed Mk2 mill from the pallet, I went to detach the arbor etc to see how the arbor and 2MT socket all go together (I am a newcomer to metalwork).....but......

I cannot fathom how to remove the arbor. I've tried to undo what I assume is a drawbar bolt at the end of the shaft, (far right of third image), but when applying a spanner the spindle just keeps turning round. I've loosened off a few grub screws that may be locking something too.

Thus by uploading some photos I was hoping that someone can point out what I need to do to take the arbor out, and explain what some of the various components do!

NB the second photo shows the arbor after removing: locking nut, cutter and spacers (seen originally fitted in the first image).

The bolt on the extreme right, third picture is the arbor drawbar. To stop the spindle turning when undoing the drawbar I put my horizontal mill in low gear and then clonk the spanner with a nylon mallet - bit like an impact wrench.

You will also need to loosen the cap head screw in the top of the overarm bracket, top of first pic and slide that casting off. Or the two bolts at the sid eof the rear brackets so the arm will slide out forwards.

Once the drawbar is about 1 turn undone give it a tap with a copper or lead hammer which will break the hold of teh MT taper. Not if it has been in for a long time this may be harder to loosen than the usual tap required. Once the spindle is free just unlind teh drawbar fully and it can be removed

Managed to remove the drawbar and arbor after following the advice above, so thanks!

I assumed that all horizontal mills had a keyway on the arbor. Mine doesn't seem to which concerns me. Am I right in saying that a keyway is critical for any horizontal milling, since spacers do just as the name implies and don't act as clamps as is currently the case?

Don't worry about the lack of keyway. The spacers give adequate force as clamps on low power machines. My Sharp mill has a 1" keyless arbor and drives a 2.5" x 3" slabbing cutter without problems.

Myford provided a horizontal milling arbor for use between centres on their lathes and this is 1/2" diameter and also keyless.

My 1'' Centec does not have a keyway. Sorry for my perhaps misleading post earlier, but after hunting the net the Mk2 seemed to be fitted with a simple vertical head which clamped to the arbor support bar. Can't locate that pic since. There was me thinking it might be like my Centec, but on a much smaller scale.
