Another "Free" MEW

Yet another "bonus" copy of MEW with ME

Popped into WHS this morning to purchase the latest ME. Found that I was being 'rewarded' with another free 'Bumper Value' copy of MEW - same as happened a few issues ago.

Of course, these are exactly the same MEWs that I purchased a month or so back. So I now have two copies of each of them to add to my collection. I've toyed with the idea of not buying MEW next month and waiting to see if I really do get a free copy of MEW eventually - although obviously I won't do that (well I probably won't).

I can't exactly put my finger on why (given that I've not paid any more for my ME) I find this practice annoying - but I seem to...

Strange how sometimes it's the little things that really irritate you isn't it?

Yes, this is annoying as I get the same thing when I buy an Airgun Magazine. I now buy once every two months and get no overlap.

It only happens once a year.

The aim is to encourage ME readers to sample MEW and vice versa.

Of course if you find it that irritating, no-one is forcing you to buy the double pack

Neil...nobody is "forcing" one to buy as you rightly say...however, you must agree that if you want both mags then you don't have much choice but to buy the package. I look at MEW in Smiths and only buy if there is something I'm interested in so I find the 'package' annoying becasue it prevents me viewing the MEW.   I have a ME that i did'nt want as i have absolutely no interest in trains (dunno why but there it is!)....I put the unwanted mag in the loo to fill in the odd boring moment when I can't be doing anything else! I DID buy a ME recently when a skeleton clock appeared on the cover but found the actual article tiresome so won't buy again.

And yet both the front cover and the contents pages are published here on this site well before the magazine appears in the store. I realise that that's not the same as actually reading an article in the store but .... once a year? Seems like an awful lot of hoo-hah over a free magazine.

Neil, any time you want to satisfy those that are annoyed by withdrawing this promotion and re-offering it in Canada, please go right ahead. wink

I was going to query the "only once a year" Neil - but then realised that the first time around, I probably got a 'free' ME with my MEW - and this time I've got a free MEW with my ME.

Ok, fair enough, it's not that annoying but perhaps next year you could give me something that I don't already read/buy - like a copy of Model Boats, RCM&E or even Good Woodworking?

laugh

.

That would, of course, depend upon [or be dictated by] what price you paid for the 'package'.

I think you will find the reason the MEW is packed 'face in' is because if it wasn't the product would display two barcodes and it would be ambiguous which magazine was being sold and which was the free one.

And imagine if they were all put on the shelf with MEW facing forwards - the ME readers might complain 'WHS only had MEW in this month!'

Neil

P.S. Many, many years ago I was told "never offer anything free to farmers, they will only complain about it. Make them pay and they'll put a value on it." The same is clearly true of MEW readers!

Hi Neil;

You keep it up, some of us have friends that we can pass on the extra copies to and gain some brownie points in the process.

Wouldn't mind seeing a copy out this way.

I am not sure admin desk jockeys should be commenting on their readers and other professions like this.

Hello Clive India

Just because you have conquered a large chunk of Asia there is no reason to refer to our valued editor as a mere desk jockey. Even if he is.

Cheers, Tim
