After having no joy with the Bengs Stirling 'Laura', I decided to have a go at their Hit & Miss engine, Karl.

It's taken 4 months, and has been a steep learning curve but I finally got there!

Just need to take it all apart now and repaint it using fuel proof paint - Duh!!

Runs well Andrew, I like the lever to bring the hit & Miss governor into action, not seen that on a model before.

Thanks Jason and pgk, the lever just turns a cam that holds off the governor. I will be replacing the coil with a CDI unit when I strip it down, the ignition's a bit optional as the plug sits quite deep in the head and the spark isn't particularly strong.

Apologies for the poor quality video, it's the first time I've used the camera for about two years and I probably should have cleaned the lens first.

So the question is, what next? I don't have a milling machine (yet) so I'm a little restricted on what I attempt. I suppose I should revisit my failed Laura stirling engine before starting anything else.

What sort of problem are you having with the Stirling engine? They tend to need accurate work, eg pistons a good fit without being too tight, any sliding seals do not need too much friction, and so on. Any sort of air leak is bad. There are people around here, like Ian SC, who have made a lot of hot air engines and might be able to advise. I've only made one, the Rider Ericsson one. It goes well, but even just a little over tightening of the gland on the little water pump is enough to stop it.

John's pretty well covered the Stirling engine. I'v been looking at your build thread from 2 or 3 years ago, you were going well right up to the end, then you pulled it apart to clean things up, then you had alignment problems, I think if you fix that you should be OK. One thing that I like is the displacer rod guide, but it could be trouble if not dead on lined up.

i am not making a sterling engine,I am making a Bengs hit and miss open crank 4 stroke engine, the problem is some the drawings are missing dimensions, I have to keep e maling bengs to get the sizes, and they don’t seem concerned that they are missing

Sorry Andy, got a bit mixed up with another Laura. It might be worth having another bit of a go at yours sometime in the future, it's good to get it up and running.
