213 forum posts 54 photos | Two pictures of my completed Chenery Aero Vee-Twin. Stats for the interested-Some 2000 hours of workshop time over a two year period. All machining carried out on a well "tuned" Clark Mini lathe and a Warco WM 14 mill, with self fitted DRO.Material kit and drawings from Hemingway kits. All work is to the drawings supplied and no modifications were introduced. I havnt fired it up yet as I have resisted the urge and am making a respectable test bench for it. Perhaps next week we will hear what sort of noise it makes Edited By JasonB on 08/04/2016 07:28:57 |

213 forum posts 54 photos | Thank you all for your comments and thank you Jason for adding the photos to my post. I would be interested in knowing where I went wrong. The red heads are painted. I tested several high temperature paints and the only one I found to be methanol proof also was Halfords own brand High Temp Paint, in a tin . The aerosol version is not methanol proof/

Keith . Keith, I think the red remark from Jason was a light hearted jibe aimed at me. Nick |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | No Aimed at me, I have a bit of a reputation for painting engines red, hence the title of this build thread, Ramon tends to pull my leg about it. And you know there is a very nice red lightweight on the web though I have something brighter in mind for that In my defence the original engines all the models were based on were red.
Keith, once the photos are in your album you can click on the little camera icon along the top of the box you are typing in and that will take you to a list of whats in your album. Just select the photo you want and say OK.

213 forum posts 54 photos | Hi Dean and Jeff, The engine startled me in firing first squeeze on the starter, but it would not run for much more than 30 seconds and stopped if I switched off the power to the glow plugs. It was originally designed for spark ignition, but is supposed to be OK on glow. Compression was not good as designed, so I re-machined .030" off each head, which certainly improved things, but it then kept blowing a gasket. One of the weak points as designed, is that you cannot get at the head nuts with the rocker gear in place, so you are unable to re-tighten after a run.Higher compression also required a change in the timing and this is still a subject of experiment. I eventually solved the head tightening by making long nuts for each head so they are now high enough to get a spanner on and this has stopped the gasket blowing problem. I have changed the carb too from that in the photos and now have a clone of an OS 35 carb fitted. I think I am at the point of being satisfied enough with its running to make a video, so watch this space.Holidays have got in the way over the past two weeks, but we are now back to normal. Keith |

213 forum posts 54 photos | During test runs of this engine I wondered what the running temperature was, as parts such as cams are Loctited on, so I used a non contact IR thermometer to measure the head temperature after a five minute run.The result is a puzzle to me and I hope someone out there has some answers, The puzzle is that the left head runs some 30degrees C hotter than the right head! Around 110 degrees left and 80 degrees right.I have checked and re checked the cam positions etc Compression on both sides is equal to a hand turn, The left side spits out much more castor oil than the right. I drain the oil after each session and a lot of castor is present in this and I assume this is due to blow past the right piston more than the left. I have changed the plugs around and tried a different make, all with the same result. Any ideas fellers ? Keith |

![]() 7881 forum posts 397 photos | Engine rotation may tend to throw more oil up in the right hand cylinder when viewed from the front, if rotation is anti-clockwise when viewed from the front. The extra oil can give that cylinder extra cooling. This is a sometime issue on full-sized Harley V-twin engines when building them for racing etc. Edited By Hopper on 27/09/2016 10:23:05 |
