I practised on a home made conversion program with making pictures onto small brass and aluminium plates. I taught myself G and M code through the free program mach3 and flashcut CNC. Like you said, change the image to grey scale. .TAP and .NGC files i used to make the code once i altered the jpeg. So, not much really i'm just a humble onlooker.
