1395 forum posts 30 photos | the one article that I was particularly interested in - the Electronic leadscrew would appear to be near a decade old in its choice of components - the artisans site would appear to be untouched for several years and the UK supplier of the components no longer seems to be interested (both sites seem to be a relic from near 20 years ago with nearly all pages to be completed etc) Whilst the article is not without merit and provides useful ideas it would have been much better to (a) check the references and (b) check if supplies still available |

1719 forum posts 1 photos | Bit of hyperbole there, Francis with the "20 years". The Yahoo group (still quite active, incidentally) where the original design was derived over many months, was started 10 years ago and it was some time later that the design was thrashed out and kits were available (maybe 1 - 2 years but the memory plays tricks sometimes). As far as I know, John Dammeyer (Electronic Artisans) still has PCB's and kits for sale. |

John Dammeyer (Electronic Artisans) I do believe that John Dammeyer of the Electronic Leadscrew is the John Dammeyer that is now working with LinuxCNC. Personal bias here: I do personally wonder why anyone would now go and fit an electronic leadscrew, when one could go full bore and do a CNC conversion. With conversational programming, as per the Tormach PathPilot (youtube it - look for their slantbed lathe demos, from, eg, nyccnc) is what we would have thought of as science fiction 20 years ago. (History: EMC code was forked by Art Fennerty to start Mach, EMC changed its name to LinuxCNC due to legal requirements; Machinekit is a recent fork from LinuxCNC. Tormach PathPilot is a very nice GUI that runs on top of Machinekit) We do indeed live in interesting times...

Well, yes, John did extend the ELS design to incorporate driving the cross slide too and under those circumstances other people have wondered the same thing. But for the basic (single axis) electronic leadscrew - as a headstock gear train replacement -, the work involved in modifying the lathe is trivial compared to full CNC. (Pretty trivial period actually). |

110 forum posts 3 photos | Received 240 yesterday, nice set of content ...but a very minor point in that it's a bit let down by the 4 folded sheets comprising pp 11-14 and 63-66 being misaligned by about 15 degrees ... so I'm missing a few words on the early pages and I need to deconstruct/reconstruct the magazine to be able to comfortably read Bob Rodgerson's Tormach article (the LHS of page 63 is increasingly opposite page 15!) Give the rate at which magazines go down a production line, I would imagine there might be quite a few copies with the same problem? |
