Not ideal conditions this morning with rapidly closing cloud, no tripod and leaning out of a window...

Dog woke me up at 6:00am... although I had planned to wake up for this.

27/28 will have Mars, Venus and Jupiter very close together.

Could astronomy and similar off topic posts be started with the subject of the topic such as Astronomy - Conjunction 9 10 15 so we know what it relates to and don't have to waste time looking at it in the latest post threads?

Oh don't start moaning again please !

David,

Isn't that why the posts have a 'Topic' shown question

Topic: Astronomy

There isn't anyway to fix it.
But one of my bugbears is..
Title shows something ( say chuff chuff obstruse element)....but buried in the discussion about just which day they changed the shade of green used on the doors...there is an "off topic" post that is ..to me..actually interesting. .
As you can tell I am not a devotee of chuff chuffs esp. "Rivet counting"..but sometimes the topic wanders to include intresting matter. .
Just how do I mine for this gold?

Neil, Going for my paper 06 00 this morning, what a wonderful surprise to see the new moon and a couple of stars as per your photograph, never seen it like that before. However to a person like me totally devoid from any info as to star position in the universe, could you please identify for me which star is which in the photograph.

Terry.

Get real David - it's under the 'astronomy' topic, so it's hardly off-topic...

dont know

Because on a Multi-Page post it will always take you to the first post on the first page .... whereas the list on the right hand side of the screen takes you to the last page.

sad

Thank you, Terry.

From bottom left:

Jupiter, Mars (very faint), Moon, Venus and very faint to the upper left of Venus, the star Regulus in Leo, which is actually about half a magnitude brighter than Mars at the moment. Mars will be at its brightest in June, Jupiter in March.

I saw that this morning... I'd worked out it was the Moon and Venus, but thanks for enlightening me as to the others, Neil...it looked fabulous!

Regards,

John.

For terry and anyone else who is interested. The following link is the Homepage for a very good Free planetarium software suite Hello Northern Sky (Windows only). It gives you a view of the Sky at any selected date or time. You can also use it to control your robot scope if you have one which put's it in the engineering CNC category and makes this a relevant post.

Other nice free software in the same vein are Stellarium (very easy to use) and Cartes du Ciel (very powerful but complex).
