I came across this while nosing about.

**LINK**

Only looked quickly. A brass boiler to hang over the fire, various engines and some drawings but not scanned that well as they were fold outs in the original book.

Thanks John, I've saved that for a more leisurely look at a later date.

I sometimes learn a lot from these old books, and even if I don't learn anything there is still the lovely ambience to soak up, of a time when a hobby was a luxury to be pursued in the coal shed or something! nerd

Regards,

John.

I had a rough read through it. Looks like there is a better explanation of a number of things than what I have noticed elsewhere - AND Google hasn't got their hands on it. There is another by Hasluck that has - all of the images in the scan have been covered over. I think that this book can be bought for around £19. Not sure who does this but that problem crops up in some old books which cover what might be called fringe interests in the more expensive hobby area. Hasluck's books are a bit mixed even though he had articles published by the IME before WW II according to my father.

Not sure about brass boilers though. On the other hand if stress calcs etc are correct and the safety valve works why not?

Brass boilers have never put Mamod offwink 2

Some nice little stationary engines in the back that could be redrawn and make a good project

The Hasluck books can be obtained through a couple of links:

and

Due to this resource I thought about buying a Kindle to read them all, but because basic Kindles can't display these pdf's properly, I ended up buying a Gigaset QV830 tablet **LINK** for the same price from Currys. It has a bigger screen, colour & more built in storage. Very happy with it and have downloaded several hundred of these books now.

Richard

A lot of the drawings in the Hasluck steam engine book have been blanked out Richard. There is enough to get proportions of some engines but not much else. Interestingly the twin cylinder engine seems to be entirely blanked out. I've generally only seen this sort of thing on Google scans. At times there has been scans from several sources but when this happens the complete ones tend to disappear.

John, ... I must confess to being confused: I have just downloaded this, via the link in Richard's post: I have only skimmed through its 227 PDF pages, but it appears to be complete.

For the sake of my sanity, could you please direct me to some specific item [in this book, or another of your choosing] that has been 'blanked out' by Google.

... I'm not disbelieving you; I just haven't yet found an example.

Thanks

MichaelG.

That's one of a number of Hasluck books I've downloaded, and while the dims are not in the diagrams, they are in the text ( a %^*^&*$"! rotten way of doing it, though).

I honestly, until I found the archive, had no idea of what a wide range of books Hasluck got involved with. The coffin making one Lindsay reprinted doesn't seem to be there, or Cassells encyclopaedia of Metalwork, and glass blowing is missing. However there is a heck of a range, from taxidermy to bee keeping, road making to watch jobbing. His style makes the job seem just so easy...

I would much prefer to have cleaned up re-prints, but failing them being available I'm happy to look at the pdf's.

Regards,

Richard.

I have google books where there are incomplete plates because they haven't been folded out for scanning.

Michael, as John said the model steam engine book has blanked out pages, this link was from Richards link, as you can see images blanked out and just the caption left.

Me too ... but I don't think that is what John is claiming has happened.

Thanks, Jason ... but I think that's only an artefact of the 'reader' software ... The PDF file is fine.

John and I have previously discussed the fact hat the "all files" option gives you the chance to download various formats.

Yep, I have Acrobat Reader 11 on a PC and that shows those pages just fine. The google pdf reader app on Google Play for Android V4.** works fine too. The basic Kindle reader didn't, in fact it showed all the diagrams and just shadows of the text... And the .mobi downloads have the text and no diagrams. Not great for either!

Hope this prompts you to find a better reader!

Regards,

Richard.

That's weird - from that link it seem to be complete - same reader as I used on the others. My default reader is Foxit but I also have adobe and a linux kde specific one. The djvu I downloaded had images blanked out as well.

Out of curiosity I changed that link to .djvu and the images are blanked out again Also earlier on I downloaded the original tiff's and the same images were blanked out in that. There is nothing wrong with my tiff browser.

I've come across several instances of blanked out images in several different subjects. So often that I have always avoided ones digitised by Google and gone for Microsoft or others. I have seen some removed for probably pseudo legal reasons such as Texereau's 1st book on telescope making - not many people would buy the 2nd book if that was available. As I see it once a copy right has lapsed it's lapsed but I doubt of the archive argues if anyone questions anything that is on there. Many have probable seen the google no ebook available as well when it is.
