Hello all, I am looking for a set of drawings/plans for a small V twin double acting oscillating launch engine. I have trawled the internet to no avail,I seem to have gone round in ever decreasing circles. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi Mark,

The Model Engineer magazine (Jan. 2003 to Nov 2003 IIRC)ran a series of articles by Colin Pape on oscillating steam engines. One of his engines was a twin V double-acting.

You can just enter the authors name here and search for the relevant issues.

Reeves do a V twin double acting engine, unfortunately it does not always self start in forward and reverse the V is not wide enough. Mine powers a small radio controlled Victorian steam launch.

Why not just take the design of an existing double acting single and modify it into a twin version ?

Hello, I have thought about that Peter and that is one option.but I would like to build a tried and tested one. I don't want to buy a kit as I wish to build from scratch.

Can I suggest the article "starting in steam" by Peter Arnot , in Model boats magazine commencing in June 1988. Just as a matter of interest, there is also a four cylinder version with both boiler and boat design.

I am building both the two and four cylinder versions myself.

Couple here but not sure if they are double or single acting, first one could be as it says "duplextype"

What about Brunnel's 'Double Diagonal' drawings (£23).

John,

That's a useful link I haven't come across whilst looking for something to have a bash at, I'm tempted by those drawings myself but try and simplify it a bit to suit my own skill level.

Has any one built that model and able to comment on it's suitability for a beginner ?

Peter, Mogens Kilde did a simplified version of a double diagonal from barstock that started in ME 4383 that would be an easier build

They can all be made as single or double acting, I presume that the 'vee' requirement isn't absolute, as long as it's self-starting.
