Hey all,

Some mates and I are competing in this weekend's Red Bull Soap Box Race
@ Alexandra Palace in our own made cart of doom. Those that frequent the model engineering show there will be aware of how steep the hill is!! devil

Please help us win the People's Choice Award by voting on our team page (it's
only 3 clicks!) : **LINK** (I think you need a facebook account..)

Watch all the shenanigans on channel Dave @ 6pm on Sunday.

Many thanks!!

(Mods - bit cheeky I know - if you need to take it down then fair enough but it only needs to stay up for a couple of days! blush)

Indeed Neil - infact if you click on the link you will see our tecnhical drawings and dimensioned elevations with 3rd angle projection! (albeit of some ye olde parchment) and the steering column has a nice home made brass bush *high tolerance* bearing to keep it smooth and light. We really wanted to make a model for the application but unfortunately we ran out of tume!

Thanks Russel!

Thomas,

I do hope that you mean *low tolerance*

Anyway ... good luck with the run.

Good luck, and go well.

The other night I watched a TV program, some English chap going for a world record in a cart, had to exceed 83 mph set by an American a number of years ago, I trust your cart is a little less high tech than that one.

Thanks everyone it went really well! Unfortunately we weren't quite "dramatic" enough to make the tv cut. Oh well, there's always next year!

Neil - an old boy engineer saw our cart and told me that we had got our Ackermann steering angle just right and he was impressed. Of course it was completely intentional and not just a happy coincidence! cheeky If you saw it on tv his was the speedster that tipped their hat to the first high speed steam cars. I think they came third in the end.

Ian - can you remember the name of the program? I'd be interested to watch it. Some of the carts weren't far off and were definately built for speed. I think the day's record was about 40mph - although given the course we had to run I wouldn't want to go much faster than that! Our top speed was around 25mph apparently, but we were pretty chunky!

That was probably the "Speed with Guy Martin" series on Channel 4, should be viewable here - loved his description of the crash!
