Hi All I have just had my Cater acts done the last one a week Saturday the result for long range is brilliant at 67 and not needing glasses for driving is wonderful. The problem I now have is reading and working in the workshop. I have bought a cheap pair of Asda 2.5 reading glasses and they work well but they are not safety glasses. I have looked on "tintinet" and there seems to be mainly Bi Focal safety glasses with a couple of full lens types. My question is what is other peoples experience.

Peter,

For work a few years ago I bought prescription safety glasses from my optician.

Peter,

You can always use a face shield, better than glasses at keeping hot swarf chips away from your face as well.

Brian

Peter I use prescription bi focal glasses in the den, have been wearing glasses all my life so nowt new to me, Use varifocals for normal day wear. As mentioned get yourself a face shield if you don't want to fork out for prescription glasses... just had a look in Machine Mart catalogue...

I've used goggles over my specs but they can tend to steam up or get grubby very quickly. I'm thinking of a face visor.

Thanks everybody

I already use a face shield for grinding but i prefer glasses for machine and bench work. I think I will try a pair of off the shelf 2.5 bi focal safety glasses the Bolle or 3 m seem to be good I already have several pairs of the Bolle normal type spread around the shop and find them excellent. At least they will be a lot cheaper than prescription and if they work out maybe prescription will be worth while.

Thanks everyone

Peter

At my first civvy job, we got safety glasses supplied, and when we first got them we were asked if we needed prescription lenses, the firm paid for that.

I bought some about 8 years ago, bifocal and tempered glass (couldn't have plastic as they won't stand up to splatter from brazing). The bifocal is medium-range and short-range, as I don't need long-distance vision in the workshop. They were about 1/2 the price of normal spectacles as they were classed as 'work-wear'. My usual spectacles last about 2 years, but I haven't even managed to put a scratch on these yet.

........ maybe prescription will be worth while.

No 'maybe' about it in my book. My eyes/eyesight are probably the most worthwhile things to spend money on and the thing I can least afford (or want) to penny-pinch.
