but the main cause for concern is I now cannot connect any devices to the computer.

I had that issue with Windows 8.1 and initially thought it was an access permissions issue, the only solution that worked for me was to uninstall my usb part in properties/hardware/device manager

When I restarted it found my various devices again, then conked out again about a week later...

I'll just hijack this thread as someone may know what to do.

Thanks. Mick.

Backup all your files. Format the hard drive and buy 7. Clean install.

That's what I would do. Oh, and don't use that shop again. They could have offered a new box with 7 on it already.

It would seem Mozilla Thunderbird has a cloud over it too, Mozilla are wanting to offload the Thunderbird part to allow them to develop other software, this at the end of of 2015.

They no longer want to provide support.

I'll just hijack this thread as someone may know what to do. I had to up grade to Windows 10 some eight months ago as no one would repair my old unit which ran Vista, so I had to buy a new unit. I've had loads of glitches with emails, copying files and photos etc, but the main cause for concern is I now cannot connect any devices to the computer. It started with my Touch iPod which won't synct to the music library. Apple support said I would have to switch off my AVG security software. When I told them I wasn't too happy about doing that they couldn't help me with the problem. Now I can't connect my Cannon Sure shot to the computer. Windows support, via a chat line, told me to input my six digit PIN so they could access the unit, but as I don't have a six digit PIN that's another blind alley. All external devices worked okay until about five weeks ago. Does this call for a £50.0 ph house call from an IT engineer?

Thanks. Mick.

Hi Mick,

Your symptoms could be due to faulty hardware. "I've had loads of glitches with emails, copying files and photos etc," , followed by trouble connecting to USB devices. Whatever else Windows 10 may be guilty of it doesn't seem to suffer from basic reliability problems.

One common example of a hardware issue that could cause your symptoms is overheating due to a faulty cooling fan or blocked vent. At first the computer behaves erratically. Later on something cooks and the fault becomes permanent.

You mentioned that the machine is only 8 months old. I would ask the supplier to replace or fix it under warranty.

Good luck,,

Dave

Hi Mike you say you have purchased a new unit can I firstly ask from who did you purchase it from ?

Secondly I have not had any problems installing any of my older devices or software on my new win 10 laptop so I suspect you may have a corrupted file/files I would suggest you run one of windows built in restore tools to re-install the installation files. Go to settings > update/security > recovery then check out the choices within the reset this PC tab

Hope this helps

If Win 10 still has RESTORE then take it back to a week before the problem happened

Restore has saved me many times over the last 15 odd years

The link contains a lovely example of corporate spin-speak: "Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing"

Ho, ho

Ho, ho

Don't laugh too soon. It's highly out of character for MS to back down and eat humble pie. Wait for the other shoe ....

In addition, someone has recently been awarded £7500 in damages for MS's unwanted 'upgrade' being loaded onto their machine. Apparently messed up their business activities. Seems like a precedent may have been set, so there may be a lot of claims following along... a bit like PPI, or volkswagen, or ...

OK, might be less now, with the current exchange rate .... but worth keeping an eye on proceedings.

I have just perused the news that Microsoft will not achieve 1 Billion users of Win 10 over all platforms by 2018 as they wished to do!

They have now closed the Nokia site and sacked 7800 workers as the Microsoft phone will not sell as well as other makes. They wrote off the entire value of Nokia at about £5.4 bn.

Earlier this month they scrapped the FInland Phone unit and laid off more staff. The idea that WIN 10 would be built into other platforms as a unifying platform across desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, small embedded systems, and the X box games.

They hoped to sell 50 million phones with Win 10 installed per annum. They only achieved 1.6% of the market share in North America and 0.45% in China, the two biggest markets.

One market analyst says that the Win 10 demand will slow down very shortly mainly through lack of sales of PC's and the fact that the free upgrade will stop at the end of this month. Many people are put of by Microsofts aggressive tactics to get people to upgrade the home PC's.

The main issue I had with the Windows Nokia phone was that there were no decent apps. Compared to iPhones and Android phones, the app store was a miserable experience and most of what was there was shareware or freeware quality. I jettisoned the thing at the first opportunity - it was unmitigated crap on every level, not just the apps. Although people like moaning about globalism, Apple etc, at least their phones, OS and apps are comprehensive and well sorted.

I was happy enough with W7 but they won't let you be happy. You will love W10, dammit!

It's rather sad but now I have been using W10 for a month or two I find that it's absolutely fine to use and the only thing I miss is the charm bar...

One surprise was logging in to Skype web beta for the first time and finding I was already logged in using my M$ account.

(Strange that skyping my daughter over 2,000 miles away gave a better result than when we tested it with her on the next floor...)

I have said before on this topic and will say again, that i've had pretty much no problems from the windows OS ever, usually it is other components in my computer causing the issues, and i fix them by rolling back the driver to an earlier incarnation, why should i fix what aint broke? So i don't care if it's not the latest so long as i can do what i need to do.

I'm all for fair criticism and i do agree that some of their business practices are immoral and they have been duly punished for bullying away all the smaller competitors. But they built their business on an accessible OS that can work on pretty much anything and i stand by that.(I would add they definitely took a downhill dive after xp, which i consider to be their most versatile and stable build they ever made)

They can get a bad rap where it simply isn't needed, the widespread almost global usage of their systems speaks volumes for itself and their detractors can't ignore it.

I mean, it's not like Mac or Android are shining examples of brilliance, I found apples one to be awkward and contrary for it's own sake, a bit like the gallic?

I declined the offer to upgrade to Windows 10 on my computer running Windows 7. A few weeks later the old laptop died and I had to buy a new one. It came with Windows 10 pre-installed. When I tried to install some of the old programs I have been using - and which wouldn't install on my Windows 7 computer - most of them installed and worked right away. A few had to be tweaked, but so far I am happy with Windows 10. It loads quickly and I have had no problems so far, pleasantly surprised in fact.

Well my wife has a Windows machine that was originally Win 8 but we upgraded to Win 10 - no problems ( so far! ) .

My machine is a Mac running OSX Yosemite ( and just upgraded to OSX El Capitan by No.2 son who is over here from Australia) - no problems with that either...........however ....no internet early this morning but, luckily, all is back working now. Big problems somewhere in London I understand. (As a retired old git I'm very pleased that I don't need to worry about things like that any more !)

As all internet suppliers go through BT, the story is that some power supplies in an exchange are down and engineers are working flat out to get them sorted.

I to am having a slow PC, taking several seconds to load or open a new window. Not that It is ever fast but this is noticeable. TalkTalk is pushing to get BT split up as they have too many eggs in their basket to work efficiently.
