I do wonder about some folks. I have seen a (well used/abused) iPad with a dodgy home button but my four year old iPad three is fine and so is my wife's iPad four. I don't think you can allow for hamfistedness. We're not on the latest OS on our six year old iMac as Apple keep posting security updates but every Major OS upgrade we've done has been without any issues. Given all the comments folks have been making about Win 10 I'm glad I don't have to use Microsoft products anymore. I did see an article the other day about loading Linux on old Macs so I may do that just. For fun when we replace our old iMac. I can't remember the version but there are at least two versions of Linux that seem to look and act very much like the Mac OS.

My 'original iPad' was purchased within a couple of weeks of the launch, and used on a daily basis until [in May this year] the battery showed signs of failing ... aside from that, it has been faultless.

... It is now semi-retired.

For daily use, I have replaced it with an iPad Pro 9.7" which is now on iOS 10

What's the pro like? I'm torn between the air 2 and the Pro when mines due for replacement.

So do I. I have an original iPad (and until recently a mini) and an early touch as well as recent models of each and their switches are fine. Nonetheless, the components of these devices with the lowest mtbf are the mechanicals particularly the switches. It's a statistic - it doesn't mean that any older model you look at will have a defective switch.

But it doesn't make sense for Apple to change the operating procedure so that the use of these components is significantly increased - and for no obvious reason. (Other than potentially more sales as machines fail?)

And, in effectively forcing these upgrades on users by means of interminable nags, Apple is no better than Microsoft who simply go ahead and update without asking (Win-10)

I'm no apologist for Microsoft but neither am I for Apple. Both are companies that are ruthlessly driven in favour of their bottom lines. They let neither customers' wishes nor well-being (or for that matter laws and regulations if they can skirt them) get in the way of that objective. To me, anyone who thinks of either one as a Hyde to the other's Jekyll is deluding themselves.

The Pro is superb in almost every respect, but I'm not convinced by the 'True Tone' feature ... It's supposed to compensate for the colour temperature of the ambient lighting, but the response seems rather exaggerated to me.

... Thankfully that feature can be turned off.

Frankly though; the display always seems a little more 'Ivory' than 'White' ... therefore not harsh on the eyes; but maybe incapable of rendering a 'brilliant white' ... I can only suggest that you have a good look at one before deciding.

The 'Pencil' is amazing ... even if Steve Jobs must be turning in his grave.

I can't agree with that. Apples upgrades have always been far less controversial than Microsofts as far as I'm concerned. Where I used to work the sidegrade from XP to Win 7 caused real problems for large numbers of staff as did MS office. Over a couple of hundred staff I'd say thousands of hours were lost getting to grips with it. No such problem with the two Mac networks.

As this thread seems to have turned into a Windows vs OSX vs Linux thread I think light hearted comparison might be of interest:

Very possibly, Vic, (like I said, I'm not an apologist for either company) - but a non-sequiteur in terms of my point that both companies effectively force upgrades (of whatever quality) on users whether or not they want them.

My daughter's just rung up with a tale of woe. After a friend updated to Windows 10 her D: drive reports it is completely full. Which wouldn't be so bad if all the files on it hadn't disappeared as well. C: is fine.

If it's the Windows 10 upgrade from a previous version, the installation program saves a copy of the the previous version (window.old). Normally (I think) that would be done on the C-drive but if there isn't room there for it (in addition to the new Win-10 install), it might well attempt to put it on the D-drive if there appears to be room.

The actual size of this copy is probably not totally predictable up front so it might be possible to fill up the D-drive and perhaps corrupt the filesystem in doing so. Don't know what she can do in the absence of a previous backup. The saved copy of the previous Windows version is likely toast but a chkdsk (or other more potent app) might fix the filesystem enough to get the original D-drive contents back.

Thanks Bandersnatch.

Windows 10 itself was OK on the C: drive, it was just D: and a load of data files that got whacked.

Seems the problem was due to the virus checker running amok after the upgrade, presumably not allowing access to anything on D: whilst it was away with the fairies. Daughter spotted the virus checker because it was using massive amounts of CPU.

De-installing the virus checker and replacing it with another one fixed the problem. Having feared the worst the computer owner was delighted to get her files back.

George,

Your link works fine on my iPad ... 'though I can't get any further because the site is Flash-based.

You may need to update to the latest version of Adobe Flash.

It comes up with the usual upgrade flash etc but I can still view the site and download plans on my iPad. I wonder what's missing. I thought we were done with flash these days?

the simplest is to download firefox from www.Mozilla.com + then install NoScript then becomes just a button at bottom of screen
As for Windows I've used briefly XP but none any later except for some necessary use in Manx Museum where they installed firefox because the windoze browser was so bad.
It used to be under something like tools or preferences but no doubt by now MS have prevented users from exercising control

I guess you are aware that Flash and Javascript are the usual vectors for malware to get on your machine.
ETA some malware running under flash actually puts up a false page simulating the browser's page requesting a flash upgrade + kindly including a link to their own doctored version which is just a trojan loader for malware - also as you probably know turning off javascript stops sites reporting back on your browser history etc
