Hmmm. Timely for me, having just negotiated a sale that requires 3 parcels each of moderate dimensions but weighing nearly 10kg.

I thought I would start looking at prices.

Royal Mail / Parcel Force: easy - just look up the tables.

Hermes? They assume asking the price is booking the service, and want to know all the details when you all need at the start is the fee for a parcel of X by Y by Z cms (obviously not engineers) and so-many kg, of contents of stated value and not in a remarkably long exclusions list. It looks too as if you need use their convoluted process for each box, not treat it as one consignment of 3 boxes.

I am almost tempted to verify just what long-distance driving we are allowed to do now (about 200 miles each way)...

I think I will plump for Royal Mail.

Use a UPS/DHL reseller such as Parcel2Go etc. You get an amazing deal on multiple boxes to the same address.

Many thanks Emgee, I've sent an email and will try to 'phone later.

The odd thing is that the tracking stops just after the item was collected..

+1 for what Mike says about a reseller.

I've used Parcel2Go in the past with every satisfaction but, for some unspecified reason, Interparcel is now my first port of call. I suspect Interparcel gave me a better deal once on an odd size. Prices generally are now too close to call between resellers so I no longer bother to comparison shop on anything in the ordinary size range.

I'd be unsurprised if Hermes et al drop the direct contact web sites for general customers and go re-seller only. Customer facing set-ups are a lot of work.

Royal Mail for the small stuff.

Nigel G2...

It comes down to what the particular courier delivery service is like at the receiving end of the parcel, how busy they are, how many permanent regular drivers they have to deliver the goods, and how well they know their routes.

Brian H...

Try to relax....(I know it is easier said then done)... in our experience, in most cases when parcels go walk about due to CV19, they reappear and get delivered within around 14 days of dispatch. This is regardless of which courier you use. Obviously, you will hear the most noise - re problems - for the cheapest couriers which will have the highest demands for their service, which in turn into the biggest load onto their systems.

Start worrying or having a discussion with courier/supplier/local depot after 14 days. This only applies to U.K. sender and receiver.

The only parcel I've ever had go missing was sent via Royal Mail. They did cough up compensation easily. No problems with Hermes

No smugness involved ... it was just a simple statement of fact, which I thought might be of interest.

If we’re discussing the performance of Hermes [and ways to avoid], it’s probably relevant.

Good news, the tap was delivered today, don't know whereabouts in the system it was and I don't care, the point is that it's safe.

Not related to Hermes but relevant to deliveries; have been waiting for an item to be delivered that was ordered from Amazon, was due by 26th May but failed to arrive, tried more than once communicating with the seller but was ignored so requested a refund, Amazon emailed today that they were refunding the cost of the order.

The world has truly gone mad.

Hermes (through eBay's packlink) put their price up to £4.36 for a 2kg parcel the other day.

Now UPS have lowered the cost of their next day service to £3.75 for 5-10 Kg

Obviously I am not complaining.

The postman has just delivered a small package from China that was ordered over 3 months ago, so there is still hope for anyone else waiting for a delivery from China. I had given up any hope of receiving the item so am well pleased.

A bit off topic but, in December last year I ordered a pair of side cutters (came with two spudgers as a free gift) from Aliexpress. Parcel was delivered by RM Tracked 48 last week. I had long forgotten my order although had received several emails (in an account I rarely check) although one day after the parcel arrived I had an email to my main account saying the order was cancelled!

Side cutters are fine and were cheap.

I have always been happy with Hermes. One thing I do know is that every courier company bar none, will sooner or later will have a problem with some shipment. I suppose the only real difference between them in that case is how well thy deal with it.

Just had an email from Hermes asking what the problem was !!!

From the email address it looks as though it was my message to [email protected] did the trick because the parcel turned up the day after it was sent.

On Wednesday evening I placed an online order with Rymans, it was despatched yesterday and received at 13.00 today all tracked with Hermes.

Nothing to complain about there!
