The number of people reading digital magazines on a windows PC is so very small Pocketmags stopped supporting them.

On my PC I stopped reading the (PM) versions when PM stopped supporting me on Windows 8.1 (not exactly an ancient version of Windows) and decided to support only Windows 10 (been there, tried it, hated it).

Chicken-and-egg it seems to me.

Hello Lionel,

I've seen the figures and the numbers of unique users of the windows reader each month was less than an average of one reader per title... unfortunately MEW and ME readers seem to be more PC focused than most.

Jason can explain how to delete files.

Resellers can't offer archive access because we have no access to their subscription systems and can't validate their subscriber numbers. Check their adverts and you will see they don't offer archive access.

To get or keep archive access you need to buy or renew your subscription through us using the subscriptions link on the green bar above or go to: www.model-engineer.co.uk/subscribe/. Choose the right title and it will take you to our subs website where you have to create a new account using a different password from the one for this website.

Renewal reminders from us should direct you to our subs website.

Neil

I DO have a current Digital and print subscription according to your site it runs out on the 19/05/2020 it was only when I added extra issues on that I'm restricted from the archive. I have been sent a new subscription number but that now ends on 24/0219 which results in a few lost issues, hence the dispute.

Not to be too complimentary on the Pocketmags support staff, but if Jason knows how to delete issues why do the support staff for the reader not know or is it they do know but can't be bothered to answer.

On a more positive note - Perhaps Jason could let us all know the procedure for deleting digital issues as I'm sure I'm not the only one it would be useful for.

Lionel

"The Figures" ? I guess were low could this rather be an indication how phissed off people are with Pockemags reader rather than ouldn't be bothered???

OR that the other Aps on phone or tablet are far easier to use and manage?
OR they prefer to read the forum archive/digital?

Of course we'll never know that answer.

Number in particular only give you the results of the questions asked not a true state of things or answer to a why we must put up with such a poor quality service we are paying for from PocketMags.

They are taking $$$$ for low quality service.

I haven't read all post fully but its quite clear to me I am not the only one unhappy with the situation.

Poor excuses do not cut it either.

Deleting a mag from the library on your device.

Open Pocketmags, select Libary from dark blue bar along the top of page, select "on device" and you will get all your downloaded issues on the screen.

Then RIGHT click the mag you want to remove (sounds familiar) and the wide blue bar will come up at the bottom. One of the icons on that bar is a dustbin though they call it archive, click that and it will be gone but you can download again.

pm delete.jpg

You get a popup, just confirm that by clicking "archive" and after a few seconds the selected mag or mags will go pale. Next time you call up your device libary the mag won't be there.

J

PS this is on a windows 10PC using Chrome.

read the other thread. I am using a windows 10 Samsung tablet. I can install the app without any issues but as soon as I try to use it it won't let me do anything without having my Microsoft account details. I have gotten round that now and can open the app but it won't find anything when I search for new magazines. In fact it can't seem to find any magazines at all. I will have a look at FF thanks.

It won't let you see your mags because you are bailing out when it wants you to create a windows account part of which is signing in with Microsoft. What's the problem with using Microsoft signin?

"Use a Windows Account means" use Microsoft signin

Perhaps a reason most people here prefer using a PC is that most are no longer in the first flush of youth. It's easier to read on a large screen than on a phone or tablet without wearing magnifying glasses.

I did try Pocketmags some time ago and found it to be terrible. Only works on a Windows PC, not Linux, and the user interface on Android is far from user friendly. It's a shame that no-one seems to be able to come up with a solution to reading off-line on a laptop other than saving one page as pdf at a time from the archive.

I also object to paying for a digital copy but then having to continue to pay to be able to refer to it. My paper copies are pay once and keep for life.

Perhaps the fact that Microsoft do not respect privacy. They collect lots of data and sell it on to advertisers who then bombard you with popups. OK tracking and popups can be blocked but why should you have to?

Jason asks "What's the problem with using Microsoft signin?"
For me - none, but I know of several who refuse to divulge personal information "unnecessarily" to wherever ~ no doubt influenced by data theft stories. I can understand their viewpoint without sharing (all) their concerns.
This is perhaps not the place to get into security issues with the M/soft Windows Account, but they do exist (quote) "But that central connection point comes with security and privacy risks." Maybe worth a read of:-

Personally, I can read an issue of MEW on my Android phone but it involves a lot of faffing about. Given my age I agree with Russell's sentiment about preferring to access on a pc. As before, my only irritant with doing so is the aggravation of not being able to"print to pdf" more than 2 pages at a time.
The PocketMags prog isn't the easiest for a user unfamiliar with Windows' idiosyncracies.

Jason, I understand that the app needs me to be signed into the store to download the app. As I said I have installed the app but I didn't like it asking for my account details to run the app. But anyway this is now done. The problem now is that the app cant find the new Mags. If I search for any Mags from the app it can't find anything at all, even if the app is listed in the app recommendations list. I have mailed pocketmags to see if they have a solution so waiting on them now.

I need to correct myself.

The pocketmags reader DOES work with W8 and 10. It is the W7 version that has been withdrawn. By my estimate they had less than 0.1 reader per title using it.

We don't actively promote the windows version because so many of our readers use W7 and XP and this was creating too many problems.

If you want it you need to get it from Microsoft Store.

This is no different from having to get the other platform's versions from Apple Store or Google Play.

Ian, did you get an e-mail with a 10 digit subscription number?

We find it can take a day or three for this to get through to a new subscriber and as you only took out the sub yesterday I wonder if that is the issue

I have my subscription number and have the current copy of mew on my android phone and on the web version of pocketmags. I had to enter the subscription info on the web version to get the mag there then delete and reinstall the version on my windows tablet to get it to appear there. I cannot get access to the previous magazines. The "restore purchases" option is missing from the windows version and on the android version it won't let me view any of the previous magazines. It wants me to pay for them. I did email pocketmags about it and they replied but the option they told me to choose to restore purchases is not there so I have mailed them back again. Waiting on a reply now.

Ian, is this a subscription you have just taken out ?

If so you will only be able to get mags within the period of that subscription from pocket mags

However if by previous mags you mean the digital archive then that has to be accessed via this site and can only be viewed online. Go to the green bar along the top of the page and click "magazines" and from there you should be able to select MEW.

As Jason says - the archive is separate from the digital subscription.

Plus you will need to put your subscription number into your profile.
