Here's the first real job I've done with the newly rebuilt 20" Edgwick shaper,

Reducing some blocks of 2" square, to make some Dickson type tool holders for my Colchester Student 1800,

The picture shows the shaper doing a 300 thou deep cut, with an 8 thou per stroke feed rate,

25 strokes a minute, going up to 60 strokes a minute on a 10 thou finishing cut.

Stroke length 5 ".

+1 for that sentiment! Sad that there are none coming on behind.

When I worked ata sugar mill, we had one similar to this.We fitted an air grinder to it to surface grind wear pads. The noise was horrendous but it worked!

Proper chips!!!

Great to see these big boys doing real work and firing smokers across the workshop

Mr Noci made a nice box for his

Edit

I have found 5% (or greater) cobalt tooling works great on a shaper btw, holds its edge better than hss and can carve through ridiculously tough metal. Great for intermittent cuts too

Much more of a machine than my 10" Royal. Mine's got vertical feed to the table, but power feed when cutting dovetails etc. is a nice touch.

If it's not too late, one word of warning that I gained from my Edgwick rotary table:- that lovely translucent green paint on the name plate is soluble in aggressive thinners, it's probably cellulose. If you want to keep it, be gentle when cleaning.
