Although not directly railway related there is a strong connection between the Hook Norton Brewery and model engineering in that it STILL uses a steam engine in the beer production process. Still in use since it's installation in 1899! - hows that for Victorian engineering. You can see details on their site at :- Hook Norton Brewery

I used to live that way and still have the memory of a pint of Old Hooky  with lunch in Hook Norton.

The brewery is well worth a visit for the Victorian building and engine -  even if you don't like beer.

Just remembered another railway related beer! A few years ago we used to have a monthly Model Engineer meeting in a railway carriage at the Didcot Railway Centre. In the cafe here they sold some excellent beers from the local Wickwar Brewing Co. Ltd. one of which was 'Station Porter'. This was the Supreme Champion Winter beer of 2008 and is described as "A smooth dark ruby-brown ale with aromas of roasted malt, coffee and spiced fruit". However, with an ABV of 6.1% it's probably a good idea to take it home!

And they still sell it there, I had a bottle only the weekend before last, a great way to end a day at Didcot.

If you are real ale fan and like riding on miniature trains, then why not check out The Fancott pub Nr. Toddington in Bedfordshire. Having visited myself a couple of times I can assure you that it's a fun venue! See the railway's website below for its operating times:

Model engineering, beer and sea fishing, what more is there in life, this is a picture I have in my workshop to remind me of my lucky existence.
ps swmbo cannot use a lathe or cast a rod but she does drink real ale, one must be thankful for small mercies.
pps my home address just happens to be in Chudleigh.

Had you noticed that the tank engine is emblazoned with Gibbs MEW. Rather appropriate for this site, well the MEW certainly is . Other than that I am envious of your hobbies .

Whilst holidaying in East Sussex recently, I visited the Harveys Brewery shop in Lewes and spotted a bottle of 'Bluebell Railway Anniversary Ale'. This celebrates the 50 years of progress at the Bluebell Railway which has operated a section of the former Lewes - East Grinstead line since 1960. Such a nice bottle it seems a shame to open it!

Hi Kelvin,
You clearly have not yet got the idea behind bottled beer. The bottle is STILL nice, even after the contents have been inspected and appreciated.
I think you will have to practice with bottles more often. Cheers!

Good point Chris; this is one bottle that recycling will have to forgo! Incidentally, the bottle states: "We will wash and refill this bottle - Please Return".

Gentlemen
Trains and Beer, try this,
West Somerset Railway and Somerset CAMRA Present the11th Real Ale Festival at Minehead Railway Station on Saturday 11/09/10 and Sunday 12/09/10.
Steam and Diesel trains from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back with Railway Related Beers on the train, Cotleigh Old Steamer and GWR175 both brewed especially for the WSR. I have no connection with either organisation but having done it previously I can highly recommend this event.
Regards
Dick

Another beer from the Hepworth Brewery was recently spotted (and bought!) in the Waitrose store in Lewes, East Sussex - their 'Iron Horse' ale featured in an earlier posting. 'Pullman' is described as a First Class Bitter which is long on flavour with a good hop nose.

Here's one I sampled this Sunday lunchtime at our local and very nice it was too!
Sorry to show my ignorance, but can anyone tell me about the locomotive?

Sorry you are leaving us Kelvin -  I particularly enjoyed the diverting thought of ale  -be it Railway related or otherwise. (These days it is mostly only the thought I'm afraid as the "cooling and lubricating fluid" is mostly incompatible with any diet! So once a week is the rule)

Good luck in your new role whatever that may be.

Regards

Norman

Thanks for your kind words Norman, though I shall be around for a few months yet!

Planet was built by R Stephenson and Co for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 and was the first steam loco to have internal cylinders, i.e. cylinders between the frames rather than outside the frame and wheels.

Another week and another railway related brew at our local pub from Cottage Brewing! This time it's an ABV 4.2% golden brown coloured best bitter with a distinctive hop aroma and named after one of the famous 'Battle of Britain' class locomotives. Built in December 1946 and numbered 34051, the locomotive currently resides in The National Rail Museum at York. See the first entry in this thread for another 'Battle of Britain' class locomotive beer.

Okay, I know this isn't a beer but one worth a mention here due to the fact that the cider takes its name from a steam traction engine owned by the company. It's quite often found on tap in many pubs now and is well worth a try, though best not sampled if driving!

Further to this earlier posting above, we now have an interesting article in stock for Model Engineer all about the Hook Norton Brewery as part of our "An Engineer's Day Out" series..
Will advise when it's about to be published...

Regarding the above posting, I can now inform readers that the Hook Norton Brewery visit article will appear in Model Engineer issue 4390 (published 5 November 2010). Be sure to get your copy as it's most interesting!

Look forward to it Kelvin.

Did you, by any chance, have the onerous task of on site research for the article?

 All the best

Norman

I'm afraid not Norman; have only visited the shop a few years back when returning from somewhere else and it was close to closing time! Will have to return one day and do the full brewery tour which, according to our forthcoming M.E. feature, sounds very good.

Many beers have nice flavours but lack the strength. I do like them to be around 5% or they are like maids water.
