After a long gap I thought it was about time to get the 'Beer Thread' going again! The three railway related beers here from Cottage Brewing have all featured at our 'local' The Hare over the past weekend. All were very good, though my particular favourite was the stronger 'Goldrush' shown at bottom.

Two more of Cottage Brewing's railway themed beers appeared over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Unfortunately, I didn't get to sample either!

Sadly, Norman Phelps passed away on Christmas Eve. The website "Spitalfields Life" re-published their article on him as a tribute. See their January 11 page...

Latest railway related beer from Cottage Brewing on tap at our local is 'Polar Express'. Once again, not sure what the loco is on the label, but the beer was excellent.

Hi Norman,
Thanks for the info. Just been to the ME Exhibition at Sandown and it was being well received and looked pretty busy. It was also nice to meet my replacement Diane Carney who is now your new web editor. Thanks for asking, the new job is going fine - great to be back on Military Modelling magazine after a very long gap - I last left it in 1983!

Another fine beer with a railway theme from Cottage Brewing sampled at our local. Couldn't see it listed on their website, can anyone tell me what the locomotive is?

Whilst visiting Wetherspoon's 'The Lord Moon of The Mall' pub in Central London I spied and sampled this interesting beer which forms part of their current Beer Festival. Coming from the RCH Brewery in Somerset, the beer is named after the famous Strawberry Line railway which used to pass close by the brewery's location. Containing real Strawberries the beer is certainly unusual!
Another railway related beer in Wetherspoon's current festival line-up is Tring Brewery's 'Signal Box' brown ale. For more details on this see: Tring Specials and click on February.

From the Concrete Cow Brewery based in Milton Keynes (where else?) this beer is a fine ruby bitter of 4.7% Vol. The reason for its title is explained on the label:
 
"Not far from the brewery and opened in 1838, Wolverton Works was the home of the class 31 steam locomotive nicknamed the 'Bloomer'. So named because much of the lower parts were exposed... a resemblance to a particular ladies fashion of the day... no originals survive and only a replica named 'Wolverton' is a reminder of this wonderful steam era".
 
Below are two views of the 1:1 scale Wolveton as mentioned on the label when it was displayed at Milton Keynes Station a few years ago (vertical poles on bottom pic are actually lamp posts in the background and are not attached to the loco!) The 2-2-2 locomotive now resides on a special plinth outside the Wolverton Works.

An Australian community workshop within The North Pine Country Historical Village which was set-up for retired tradespersons, and other interested persons, to assist with the building work, and to pass their skills to the public. Although not directly railway related there is a strong connection between the Hook Norton Brewery and model engineering in that it STILL uses a steam engine in the beer production process. Still in use since it's installation in 1899! - hows that for Victorian engineering. You can see details on their site at :- Hook Norton Brewery
 
I used to live that way and still have the memory of a pint of Old Hooky  with lunch in Hook Norton.
 
The brewery is well worth a visit for the Victorian building and engine -  even if you don't like beer.
 
Further to this earlier posting above, we now have an interesting article in stock for Model Engineer all about the Hook Norton Brewery as part of our "An Engineer's Day Out" series..
 Will advise when it's about to be published...

Okay, I know this isn't a beer but one worth a mention here due to the fact that the cider takes its name from a steam traction engine owned by the company. It's quite often found on tap in many pubs now and is well worth a try, though best not sampled if driving!

Another week and another railway related brew at our local pub from Cottage Brewing! This time it's an ABV 4.2% golden brown coloured best bitter with a distinctive hop aroma and named after one of the famous 'Battle of Britain' class locomotives. Built in December 1946 and numbered 34051, the locomotive currently resides in The National Rail Museum at York. See the first entry in this thread for another 'Battle of Britain' class locomotive beer.

Here's one I sampled this Sunday lunchtime at our local and very nice it was too!

Another beer from the Hepworth Brewery was recently spotted (and bought!) in the Waitrose store in Lewes, East Sussex - their 'Iron Horse' ale featured in an earlier posting. 'Pullman' is described as a First Class Bitter which is long on flavour with a good hop nose.

Whilst holidaying in East Sussex recently, I visited the Harveys Brewery shop in Lewes and spotted a bottle of 'Bluebell Railway Anniversary Ale'. This celebrates the 50 years of progress at the Bluebell Railway which has operated a section of the former Lewes - East Grinstead line since 1960. Such a nice bottle it seems a shame to open it!

If you are a regular visitor to our Model Engineer Exhibition then the name of Norman Phelps will be familiar to you. Norman has been a keen supporter of the show for many years during which he has acted as both Steward and Judge. The following item was spotted on the "Spitalfields Life" website and will no doubt be of interest to our model boating fraternity.

If you are real ale fan and like riding on miniature trains, then why not check out The Fancott pub Nr. Toddington in Bedfordshire. Having visited myself a couple of times I can assure you that it's a fun venue! See the railway's website below for its operating times:
