A stark reminder to leisure cyclists !

How times have changed. Back in the late 1960s/early 70s I got done for doing more than 40 mph in an Escort van on an unrestricted section of the A1 dual carriageway. Enforcement was very strict then, fine and licence endorsement.

Hi Robert, I think you'll find that even car derived vans exceeding 2 Tonnes laden weight will be the same as all commercial vans as far as maximum speeds are concerned.

Nick a van cannot be classified as a car-derived van if it's laden weight is above 2 tonnes.

As someone else mentioned this does not seem to be a complete bicycle, the BBC show the handlebars inside the car but the rest of the diamond and rear wheel are nowhere to be seen. Nevertheless a large chunk of bicycle coming though your windscreen has to be an unwelcome visitor. The old days of toughened windscreens was scary when instead of a stone chip you were suddenly plunged to zero visibility and punching out the shattered glass was the only way to see where you were going. If you could safely stop and cover all the heater vents before knocking out the screen then it was happy days. I still found bits of glass hiding months later.

according to the lecture of my recent speed awereness course what matters is what is written in the logbook. which was useful to know as both my pickups weigh over 2 tons loaded

That's just a side effect of using a modern, powerful, 'clean', not particularly durable diesel engine. It's basically the same engine you'll find in Mercedes cars. Which is all a bit different to the detuned 2.0l Pinto Ford put into Mk2 Transits
