First lathe

Some people will always resist technological advances. For me, anything that improves ease of use and reduces risk of error is a good thing.

Fully agree but far better to learn the basics BEFORE adding the exotics. First motorised two wheeler was a Vespa, last of four bikes, Moto Guzzi Le Mans. Learned a lot between.

Yes Barrie, learned that the prince of darkness was alive and well with Magnetic Marshmallow and Bosh only slightly better. Went through the "Mill(er)" saga on the Velo.

My experiences with Lucas parts on cars is that Lucas components are no worse than Bosch, but are cheaper to buy and are actually repairable. Lucas connectors are terrible, and most wiring looms don't have enough separate earths.

People moan about Luas electrics but forget they had to be made to a price the OE customer would pay.

I have an auto-electrician friend, Lucas trained and can repair any of the parts on my old Pre War bikes claiming all to be simple.

I was once told that Ford would take a Lucas electrical part and cost analyse it. If their estimate differed from the Lucas price by more than a penny, Joseph had to try again!

Any company supplying into high volume manufacture has to control costs very closely. (In days of yore, I used to give C A V, Bosch, and Stanadyne a hard time on pricing. Especially C A V having been a Development Engineer on the product! )

From a manufacturer's point of view, the part needs to survive long enough to get out of warranty, without being so short lived as to be considered unreliable. (Examples: The Chrysler ballast resistor, the original clutch cable on Renault 5 Mk2, Ford 100E head gaskets etc )

Compare a Halina camera with a Leica 3F, or a Zenith B vs a Canon AE1P or F1n. You got what you paid for.

Deeming is owed a huge debt, even if it took Japan to convince us.

OK, I'll take your bait. I spent a good bit of my 35 years in manufacturing and inventory control software testing Standard and Current Cost calculation and rollup subsystems, and who or what is Deeming?

Well it all goes to show that you pays your money and takes your choice and whatever people have they will defend as "the right way". You should obviously find an old treadle lathe to get started....

Deeming was the American engineer whose ideas on quality management that Toyota developed.

However you spell his name, he devised the Total Quality concept.

And we have all benefited from that in all sorts of spheres.

Personally, I'll settle for one E and one M in the name.

His system certainly works and made a lot of companies get their act together.
