... A guy on a couple of other sites had a disagreement with the site and simply broke the links in PB to prevent his images being viewed. You obviously couldn't do this if you've uploaded directly to a site. Good point, but this site at least allows you delete photographs after they've been uploaded. |

You obviously couldn't do this if you've uploaded directly to a site. . I seem to recall one primadonna member we had here that stored the images to his build log upon this site. On one of his throwing his toys out of the pram escapades he just simply deleted the album thus the threads relating to the images lost them and thus made no more sense than broken biscuits. - In this case it was particularly selfish as many members had also contributed much time, effort and thought to his threads.

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | Well it looks like I may have been correct when I said earlier that PB were hitting the freeloaders first. Those of us who were paying even the modest $30 per year will still be able to get all the services prior to the fee changes until end of December 2018. Maybe by then they might have altered the pricing structure but at least it gives me time to decide what to do at my own pace and not make a rush decision.
J PS Nick, I can think of someone else who also deleted things

![]() 439 forum posts 4 photos | The "right click if you are on IE, keep clicking through the ads" approach is only going to work for those few who have been following these threads and isn't that convenient for the casual users. I'm moving all my images to another service provider and have fixed the links to them on two other forums. However, on this forum old posts can't be edited by the post owner. It’s there for new posts and then disappears at some point I'm happy to make the changes to my posts if the moderators/admins can switch on the edit function for old posts. Pete |

![]() 439 forum posts 4 photos | Neil I wasn't asking you to do anything other than change a configuration setting on the system to enable editing of one’s own posts. Then I thought about what you meant by 'its not practical', why some posts can be edited and others can't and when they change from one state to another. I'm guessing it’s about moderation, once a post has been moderated for content it then gets locked so the moderators don't need to go back to it. Otherwise, you'd have to re-moderate all the re-edited posts? It’s up to you guys really. If you want the forum to be a long-term reference source you need to give people the chance to fix this problem for you. In order to ensure a reference source, the long-term solution should be that the forums invest in their own storage capacity rather than expect everybody to trump up $399/year to some third party who may or not be in business in 20years time. Maybe you guys need to take the lead and start on the business case, owning your own capacity would be less risk and far more cost effective for everybody. |

I think it's probably more about the fact that some people get email copies of posts in selected threads; others read online and respond to the original post. If editing is allowed past that point, what people read and replied to could be changed wholesale and rapidly make the conversation a complete mess. It's fine if the editing is minor - spelling misteaks etc - and the current 10 or 15 minutes is to allow for that. But there's no way to guarantee that. Having said that, I do know of other forums where editing is allowed any time. AFAIK, only new member posts are moderated before posting and only on the first post to establish that they are genuine and not a spammer/troll. |

It's simpler than that, the only option I have would be to give people temporary moderator status. Once I do that for one person, how can I refuse anyone else? And how would other users react if they knew any member who asked could have the opportunity to change almost anything or explore all parts of the website? A temporary change of edit status does not seem to be possible without major intervention, and as the website has been more or less behaving of late, I'm not going to ask for any system changes. Neil Neil I'm sorry but I must say that is a very short sighted view. The website is very much an integral part of the ME/MEW delivery and long term planning is needed. Firstly to be able to fix the lost content and secondly to provide a more complete solution. People are able to reference ME articles going back 100years, if ME don't provide for all the content of the website to be held locally then you risk gems like Deans V12 build being lost for others. Like other service providers you've got advertisers providing revenue which could be used to fund a hosted content server. You'd be suprised how cheap those services are these days. Pete |

![]() 2376 forum posts 800 photos | Pete, I'm not sure I understand your point. All the images for my posts are already hosted by the ME forum Albums. Consequently I assume that the images will be available for as long as the forum exists. This has always seemed to me to be a much better solution than relying on the vagaries of third party hosting. Cheers, Rod |

Cheers, Rod Rod Rod You are correct. There must have been a reason why I hadn't used them in the past. Appologies Neil I'll stop rambling on. But it is a pity that we can't fix the external links to local links and take the opportunity to tidy up the mess while the problem is front of mind Pete |
JasonB | 20/07/2017 07:21:48 |
![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | One of the main reasons people don't use the albums on here is that they post on several forums so often easier to copy and paste a post made in one forum and paste in another with just a few adjustments for this forums quirks. It would take more time to upload and resize photos multiple times and is also easier to find a photo that you may want to post if they are all located in one place. That is why I mostly use external hosting though I do also have over 1000 images here that mostly relate to posts made on this forum and not used elsewhere. As to fixing external links even if it were made possible I'm sure there would only be a limited take up as there are people who no longer visit the site, those that would rather do other things with their time and those who are not retired so don't have the time to go through 11,000 posts to see what they contain and repost the links to 4000 or so images then multiply that by 3-4 forums One solution if you did want to update the images on a build thread here would be to copy and paste the posts into either a new thread or a reply at the end and then add the new image links.
