Sorry Michael, I will have a look, but I know the pop-up cookies don't work properly on Ipads, tablets and mobiles, I did raise this when the request for the pop-ups was originally made. I am working on a responsive design for all the websites, which I hope will address the specific problems already apparent for mobiles and tablets, but I will see if I can do anything about this issue tomorrow morning

I'm not a mainstream poster but I am an avid reader. Not for much longer, I'm afraid...

The pop-up appears every time, even when logged in on the desk-top.

However, it does have the usual "Close" icon in the top right hand corner. One click and its gone!

So what's the problem?

My pop-up has a picture of an undressed nubile draped over a lathe.

Keep up the good work here

.

I have ones of an 'undressed' draped over a steam engine. (really) That I took back in the days of film on a Blad.

But as it is a full size engine it does not qualify for this model engineering site. So this prevents me posting the images here.devil

once you log in the pop-up will go until you log out,

If I'm interpreting you correctly, Neil, it doesn't work that way for me. I stay logged in between sessions but the pop-up pops up each time I open the site.

Edit: it appears the pop-up is suppressed for as long as I have that browser session open - that is, I can go somewhere else in the same window/tab and come back here OK. But the cookie is apparently deleted when the browser is closed.

I don't know how much control you guys have on data available for the Home page but if you were able to have any subscription numbers returns (but hidden) then your pop up advert could simply only display if no # in the field - Just a thought.

It is also frustrating (a little like the free gifts) when your International members get these UK only items.

Great forum and mags otherwise!!!

Bruce

Nice one seems your loosing more than your gaining.

If I wanted the mag I would buy the odd copy, but in the time it's been on the shelves I have never needed it.

Nuff said.

Logged off and staying off until it's resolved.

Maybe Neil should give an idea of the proportion of Number of subscribers to Number of visitors or even just forum members and then you will see the size of the target he is aiming at!! or better still what take up rate he gets from the promotion

Ads a couple here have said it pops up each time the browser visits ME for the first time in a session even if staying logged in, so as I keep my browser open all day it sonly going to pop up once in 24hrs which I can live with.

But why only available in the UK, why not also do 3 digital subs for £1 then you will also be covering international readers if you are trying to reach out to the biggest possible number of potential new subscribers?

From some of the comments above, I have deduced that:

Some members here are members as long as everything is going their way, and will dump you like a shot if they disagree with anything you do, also zero tolerance for a technical issue (which makes me question what the hell they are doing here in the first place).

More people than I thought don't have a life and a popup on a free forum which is, by and large, populated by good decent people who will help you out if you are stuck is the_End_of_The_World for some.

I think your pop has two justifications:

1) tell people, who don't already, that there is a magazine.

2) make people feel guilty for not buying it.

I suspect that over 90% of people who visit this forum know that there is a printed magazine. They certainly know that once they see the pop up for the first time - they don't need to be reminded. So justification 1 is a fail.

Making people feel guilty is not a great way to build a business. Concentrate on great products and make that the motivation.

It is difficult to argue against 'pop ups are annoying'. Anything that isn't interesting and applicable to a user has a high chance of being annoying. By repeating the pop-up (with no additional information) it gets more and more annoying.

Katy - good job under difficult circumstances! You seem to know more than most of us about web site maintenance.

On a laptop or desktop, if you are repeatedly seeing the pop-up whilst logged in and in the same browser session, that suggests your cookies settings are blocking the cookie which is set to stop you seeing it again. If you reduce your cookie privacy setting for this website, that may help.

Jason,

That is NOT what happens when using some pads/tablets

I use several devices to view this forum, and as each time I go to a different device I get am logged out I don't login unless I am posting, I have a link to the forum, I use this, when I go to a subject then back again the popup re-appears, this is what is annoying, once a day would be not so bad, having logged in to write this I am not getting the popup. For me either allow me to be logged in on several devices or fix the popup so it doesn't keep appearing.

Fully agree with you Oompa lumpa, lots of chill pills needed.......

I have an android tablet, in web browser I have a tab with the ME forum sight, open browser, click on ME tab, click refresh to get latest forum posts and away I go. ME sight set to auto login, no popups, no problems.

> proportion of Number of subscribers to Number of visitors

There are many more visitors than subscribers, and only a proportion of subscribers use the forum.

Naturally I can't share all the figures, but each week more visitors than subscribers and on average each one visits several pages and stays for several minutes.

You'll see Katy has already given some feedback (thanks Katy).

The marketing department told me that if it was unpopular they would pull it, they have already given the OK to do so - before 9:00 am but please allow a while for the change to take effect.

Neil
