Look on the bright side George, at least you don't have to worry about what your next project is going to be yet. wink

It works !... finally got my Vertical Cross to run, the stroke of the valve rod wasn't long enough to set the positioning of the spool valve correctly so I had to drill deeper into the valve coupling plus re-tap thread deeper, this gave me extra adjustment to position the spool valve correctly. I had sealed the valve chest gland with graphite thread & this also helped, I need to pack the cylinder gland as this is passing air, obviously this is not giving full air volume/flow to the cylinder. Still need to titivate, do a few more mods, clean up, degrease, prime, paint, make cylinder cladding etc. so it's another strip down so still plenty to do... but at least it works...

p.s. still need to do some alignment as there is some crankshaft float, as can be seen on video, although packing the cylinder gland will help centralise the piston rod as well as sealing the cylinder so ...

I lied about leaving posts 'till later'... devil... gave my engine another trial run after packing cylinder gland; run it up to bed in any tight spots & got it ticking over @ approx 15 psi. Watching it running ( cool ) gave me the chance to see where else it may be passing air... top & bottom cylinder cover joints only just leaking air & cyl.oil by a show of bubbles, not to worry, will be sorted during the titi-vashun phase. face 23 .

Started clean up on the smaller items & gave the flywheel a coating, did use grey etch primer under the aero blue, thought I'd try a different colour scheme as opposed to the usual green & red...

Nice colour for that flywheel. I see some rough edges and no center hole. Still have to do some machining on the flywheel?

I think the centre hole is there just covered with masking tape.

And I guess the 'rough edges' are masking tape too.

After the passing of much time it seems I have the semblance of a rocking valve engine.

Hasbrouk family shot 4.jpg

Hasbrouk family shot 5.jpg

My cosmetic "improvements" from Ray HasBrouk's original design such as visible crankshaft bearings, a different eccentric arrangement and a different connecting rod end ganged up on me.  The cumulative result is that the valve operating rod end is some 5mm outside the valve operating arm.  One solution would have been to bend the rod back into line but I don't normally like to see push rods with bends in them so I made an extended link.  It may stay, it may not.

What I really need to do is either stick to designer's drawings or properly think through what I'm "improving".  A lesson learned.  frown

Next steps are to arrange the plumbing and the wooden  base, decide on a colour and paint it.

... to pre-empt the next question... the paint is 'rattle can' from a local 'Hobbycraft' shop... usual disclaimer, I also got a can of cream to complement the blue... ?

Ha Ha. Yes and if my memory is correct the Big Bopper in very late1950s.

I have certainly reached the stage where a trip to the Medics usually involves being told “it’s age related”.
