Today I have been scratching my head as to how, every time I log into this site and open up a forum I get a pop up telling me I have a virus called "snaketap" and offering to have it removed. Of course when you log in to the "Free" anti virus site you are offered a choice of a whole range of APPS all at a price- no signs of any free ones.

Hi Bob,

You probably have some malware on your 'puter.

Try either or both of these - free and not full of nasties:

SPYBOT

AD AWARE

One caution - they may try and load search bars or similar when installing but they will ask and you can check a box to say no if they do. They never used to but in time these things are so successful & people eventually realise they can make a living out of their hard work...

It is, after all is said and done, hardly Bodger's Lodge material which needs to be originated by JS.

This was such a good thread, why have we got all this geeky rubbish on it now?

You're right of course. I did apologise for the drift earlier, maybe a mod can delete my posts on this page.

Anyway, I'm very interested in the progress of the Colchester Bantam, particularly how well the toothed belt drive is working out.

Steve,

Can't comment on the Bantam belt drive as I stripped this machine to fit a DRO and give it a quick flash over with the spray gun as the delectable Deb's is very particular about things being nice and clean.

Yes I know I wonder the same wink

It has done one job which was to thread a big band saw shaft at 8 tpi and 10 tpi, respective ends and it did this OK.

But anyway both the TOS and the Chinese 14 x 30 are on belt drive as well. The Chinese machine doesn't see a lot of work, it's more a second string lathe if the TOS is set up.

However the TOS is in daily use and it works well, I seem to spend more time running at 1200 revs than I have before and it's made it very quiet.

I still have to swap from timing belt drive to gears for imperial threads and Module threads [ I do a fair bit of metric worms for gearboxes ] and it's only like swapping gears anyway.

This is one reason to get the Bantam in that it's an all Imperial machine so easier to swap machines than gears.

Hopefully the Bantam will get done later this month, just got to final fit the rear DRO, brackets are done but one is temporary. Then need to fit an iGauging scale to the tailstock, coat of paint and reassemble.

I had thought about going in and moderating the thread and deleting a few posts.

Not because it was my thread but more because I hate Apple, Adobe, Norton and Harley Davidson, but not necessarily in that order................

Hey, Nortons are allright !. I like mine anyway blush.

Seriously, I, perhaps like a lot of people, look forward to the Bodgers Lodge posts, the machining that is !.Not geeky rubbish as Herbert says.Ive learnt a lot, especially his belt drive mod to the lathe. I converted my DSG to the same, hell of a difference. Zapp Automation in Poole are good for gears and pulleys (no connection).

Sorry should have made it clear, Norton, the anti-virus people, or should that be virus like Adobe.

Best place I have found for belts and pulleys is www.beltingonline.com

I've been using them for 25 years and the only virus I've ever seen on a Mac was a Microsoft Word Macro Virus on a machine at work many years ago. As a result I've always avoided Microsoft products like the plague unless someone else was providing support. smiley

Here's a funny thing, Wikipedia has two category pages, Mac Viruses and Windows viruses.

There are seven entries under Mac, five under Windows...

Well this repair might be of interest to Mac users as it was pissing water out.

Long rotor [ no pics - not relevant ] about 3 -4 HP with hollow shaft that drives a fan in a furnace. It's hollow as at the 'fan' end there is a housing that a lance is fitted into and it pumps water down the centre to keep it cool and the water returns back down the shaft and into the housing where it drains away.

Problem is it was leaking water a bit bad so stripped down and this is what was found.

That loose bit should stick up and carry a seal so it needs sticking back. Did actually look at carving a new one out of solid as to complex to use the old one as a pattern for casting. Not a good photo but that is all pure corrosion.

So clean the hole up and send it out for shot blasting.

This shows the true level of corrosion, in fact in three places once cleaned it was actually thru the housing. So bit of welding and get this.

And 'tother side.

Left oversize so it can be spun up true after welding. All the serious pits punched thru and welded then a coupl of coats of self levelling resin applied to the inside and a clean up.

That looks a tad better and should have earnt enough for a pie and a pint tomorrow night.

cheeky Yes, yes, yes; that`s all good.........but which colour for the paint? laugh
